Inside Movement Medicine 💊
Senior Lead @nia_jea interviews cultural organiser and co-founding director of @MigrantsInCulture @joonlynngoh - link in bio!

The cohort’s next 6 day intensive training with @bsturdivantsr & @stacikhaines is next week — ahead of this, explore some of the work, theory and practice.

Politicised somatics helps us to include our body as a site of knowing when doing our movement work, which allows us to build the competencies to avoid perpetuating the very harms we’re trying to address. Movement Medicine is a programme investing in embodied skills for our communities and movements. A growing cohort (currently 30+) of movement leaders, organisers, healthcare practitioners and those working in social justice, training in politicised somatics to bring about the futures we want to call in.

Joon-Lynn Goh is a cultural organiser and co-founding director of Migrants in Culture, a migrant-led art + design studio that resources organisers to build more creative and powerful social movements. Joon-Lynn is a Thirty Percy Changemaker, a GLA Civic Futures Fellow and co-recipient of UNHCR Champion of the Year, Women on the Move Award. She declined a MBE for Services to Equality for organising a Syrian refugee resettlement programme with Bristol City Council and Citizens UK.

Captured by the spirit of Sichuan’s tea house culture 🍵🍃🍃

Tea houses in neighourhood corners
Tea house straddling rivers
Tea houses in temples
Tea houses at every public park
Tea houses high up in mountains

A space to sit, to be with friends / to be alone but not isolated, to read, to rest, to take a nap, to be still, to be. Zero pretense or formality. 1 cup, as much hot water as you need. Aka a functioning community space.

Carrying precious moments of summer stillness into a busy season ahead

I spent last week at @borneokomrad Semporna, a stateless youth movement and network of alternative schools across Sabah, Malaysia.

In Sabah, 1 in 4 people are stateless. Locals say this is closer to 1 in 3, and in Semporna, closer to 1 in 2. These statistics are barely believable but true. This equates to half of the population being denied rights including the right to education.

In the same way that migrants are illegalised across the world, the sea indigenous people, known as the Bajau Laut, who have been living across the waters between Malaysia, Indonesia and the Phillipines for thousands of years, have been illegalised by contemporary nation state borders.

Borneo Komrad has been challenging this denial of rights by a setting up a network of sekolah alternatif and now a universiti alternatif with a radical curriculum that prioritises safety, joy, community and the mandasi / self-determination of young people to choose what they want to learn and who they want to become, regardless of borders.

Borneo Komrad is a example of the alternative and prefigurative infrastructures we need to build as communities to demonstrate what is possible, as well as what is common sense, that we are all equal and we all deserve the right to dignity, safety and belonging.

Terima kasih for welcoming me in, letting me stay in your home, for your warmth, generous, & patience with my bad language skills! Including @mukmin_nantang @syahfeeq @nurzack.tee

Please do check out the work of @borneokomrad, which is an inspiration for us all across the world

Beauty and possibility I felt this spring ✨✨🌸🌸

1. Sun rising from the sea off Mousehole, Cornwall. I could watch this everyday and still be spellbound

2. Beatrice Gonzales at the Barbican - an artist painting through Columbia’s La Violencia. I stood in front of these paintings for so long. Their impact is visceral - Maps of people’s dreams that sing in vivid colour even though they might not be alive to see them through. Mothers dignified as deities, grieving on behalf for the world.

3. Love, creativity and abolition in and beyond academia. One of our first overnight workshops on the ABC of abolition, with Maia, giving us the accurate understanding it takes a minimum 3 people, let alone a village, to hold a workshop and a child at the same time.

4. MRN x LUSH campaign in 100 shops across the UK. Such joy to see how much this resonated with people across the country. Speaking truth! Campaign design by the brilliant Rosalie & Zara.

5. Seyni Awa Camara’s totemic clay figures at the Wellcome Collection - visibilising the many many journeys of mothering that are never seen. These little hands simultaneously overwhelm and uphold her

6. It’s been 10 years since I reclaimed my full name Joon Lynn, and it’s never felt so good. Original posting shared by Brian who officiated this when we used to use facebook

7. 4th year of Saturday School re-begins! A practice space for imagining, embodying and designing for border abolition that genuinely feels like we’re collectively experimenting and discovering enroute.

8. 4th year of Movement Medicine with HJL, Staci, Erika and Brandon. Feeling into power, into spirit. Stretched, opened, and deeply grateful for this journey together. by @joonlynngoh

Border Abolition requires us to remove violent state practices such as prisons, detention centres and deportation, and instead cultivate ways of caring and organisation that makes bordering a redundant solution.

In our second Pages for Changes piece, @joonlynngoh, a migrant and cultural organiser and founder of @migrantsinculture, shares her recommendations for those looking for inspiration on how we move beyond our current systems.

Together we can imagine living without borders.

A soul nourishing weekend with the daoism practice group. After meeting regularly online over the 3+ years, a few of us took a journey to the North to meet in person, to experience @raeyensong ‘s TUA-MAK and to offer a public reflection on themes of ancestral remembering, diasporic retrieval, hungry ghosts and cyclical cosmologies and creation myths.

It was very moving to be inside TUA-MAK. I felt my body dissolve and enter an expanded universe, decentered from the human; sprawling & tentacular with ancestral presence. It was unsettling to be with so much life-death-life, to feel a wider ecology of digestion, decomposition and dispersal in motion.

Almost one year from my father’s passing, being in this universe helped me imagine how my father has journeyed from ash entering the the sea off the coast of KL, Malaysia, to nourishing underwater life, travelling oceans, becoming cloud, then rain, and finally into a tree that I pass daily on my walk to work.

Pleasure and gratitude to be hosted by @raeyensong @michaelbarr_michaelbarr @glasgowtramway
With the depthful company of @hannahxiaoyue @kwame_lo Josie Yinka

thank you for a beautiful and nourishing wknd. Sublime bonus to also connect in person with @tariquarooted ✨✨✨🙏🏼 by @joonlynngoh
