What a shameful and awful end to this story that is essentially small - Jason Arday did not wield power over lives, make decisions that affect all of us, did not steal from the country, get dodgy multi- million pound donations from suspect sources, give deals to his friends to make money from our taxes for sub standard equipment, lie to the entire country, break this country financially, allow a people to continue to be killed in a genocide - he did a few small things which were only significant to a very few people who found an easy way to show him up and pursued him until he was broken. This is racism and this is another day when I am so embarrassed to be white, to feel confident that in this country I have an easy ride, I do not have people who will hate me as soon as they catch sight of me knowing nothing more about me than the colour of my skin. @andy.burnham - listen to this - make tackling racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny and hate a priority before this country loses its soul and humanity. Don’t appease the haters, don’t try and make prejudice acceptable so that you maintain votes - make tolerance, acceptance and mutual respect your priority. To Jason Arday’s family - I am so sorry for your loss. Jason deserved so much better. by @joortmans
Went to see ‘Mineral’ @designmuseum , designers in residence 2025/26. One of the 4 designers looking at the role of minerals in the climate crisis is my niece, @rosawhiteley. Her project ‘Chalkophiles’ investigates chalk aquifers that supply water to Southern England through dew pond building, field work, mapping and the influence of economics and ‘ownership’ of supply on an everyday essential and presents collective care of chalk ecologies as a shared living system. 1) The spade 2) The digitally carved wood handle of the spade. Rosa collaborated with tool maker, Byron Kalomamas to create a beautiful set of implements, maps and banners using both digital and hand craft methods. 3) the full set of tools 4) ‘Don’t Force Water Users to Sell Out Bad Business’ 5) A bit of a blip here to the gorgeous work of @simonebrewster_london whose work is on the platform - an amazing range from giant pots to stunning jewellery and beautiful paintings - a diverse group of objects all clearly defined by curves, colour and materials - although many are large in scale, even the group of small pots is a statement. 3 images in this set Back to Rosa’s work. Here is the pond she has installed in the Design Museum Research garden - luckily she started it before the drought and the fact that it is developing its own living system now is a miracle considering the drought we are in. It just needs some frogs and newts to find it and create a small world there. Boitle - with an apple wood head straight from @jane_staniland and Colin Martin’s garden. The heads on the head of the tool - used to beat the ground to find water, belong to the Directors of failing water companies across southern England still collecting bonus’. @raffaelloelbaz looks at the manufacture of glass and its use of heat in ‘In the Presence of Heat’ Rafael El Baz @eliselimon ‘Slow Ore’ investigates the long term implications of copper mining infrastructures @alf.y__ ‘A Lithium Horizon’ responds to the UK governments Critical Mineral Strategy, which projects a 1100% increase in demand for domestic lithium by 2035 An amazing group of work from 4 designers - 3 from an architectural design background and o by @joortmans
Yesterday was my birthday and @harryortmans made this card for me. I’m putting this up today to remind me of the absolute joy that the England team have given us for the past few weeks. I am not a natural football fan despite being mother to two obsessives - Harry and Fred - and years of touchlines, washing of sweaty kits, increasingly large trainers and studs moored up at the front door, London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea causing near fisticuffs on a school night etc. etc. , but this year I get it and it’s to do with the team. What an incredible unit and selection of individuals they are. What a credit to the country - again I’m not a patriot obsessed with flags and nationalism , but this time the England flag stood for something I could get behind - dedication, talent, generosity, a beautiful picture of the vibrant and diverse country that I feel lucky to be a part of. Inevitably the trolls will already be online bullying and abusing these fantastic young men who have enlivened our summer and inspired us all, but although loud in their nastiness, I believe that they are the minority and I am sure that so many more people will hold the memory of this team giving us the thrill of the year in their hearts and memories. Holding on for the next chance in 2030 when I will be all in from the first game. Not forgetting of course that we have the fabulous Lionesses in 2027 to look forward to as well. Not sure that I will ever stretch to wearing the kit shirt though - if it ever comes in silk or linen count me in⚽️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #worldcup2026 #englandfootball #englandteam #harrykane #heyjude by @joortmans
Cecily Brown: Picture making at the Serpentine South Gallery is a celebration of paint and panting through dark fairy tales and spooky woodland. Where any dapple lit glade may suggest danger underfoot or hiding deep in the tangles of bramble and trees. Streams and puddles reveal half drowned objects that may be a tree trunk or is something else? I have to open with her ‘New girl on a swing’ Yes, I am a cliche and one of the first paintings I loved - along with the Pre-Raphaelites, Botticelli, and any of the portraits in @nationalportraitgallery that showed a fabulous outfit in great detail, was Fragonard’s Girl on a Swing. Here she is wearing less and almost consumed by nature. I love the couples in the woods and the odd sweet faun whose safety you fear for with no obvious cause. Her sketchbooks show lots of influence and characters from children’s stories - out of context and vulnerable in a crowd. Her sketches from #beatrixpotter’s The tale of Two Bad Mice’ are almost terrifying in the chaos of the messy doll’s house. (So I only show the Hunca Munca with the book at the end because I recently picked them up from neighbouring charity shops within 10 mins of each other - a gift in waiting) 1 - ‘New Girl in a Swing’ 2 - ‘A Bitter Moon’ 3 - ‘Terry and Julie’ 4 - ‘Couple’ 5- ‘Hurry Up Please: It’s Time 6- ‘Nature Walk with Paranoia’ - love this title #cecilybrown #serpentinesouthgallery #painting #paintingnature by @joortmans
I first visited the US in 1984 starting in Chicago then flying to La and taking Highway 1 to San Francisco returning via Yosemite, LasVegas and Death Valley. Food was so different - bright colours, huge portions, and salty, spicy or sweet - very. We went to #ceasarspalace for breakfast in Las Vegas and in the night club gloom of the buffet were gateaux of all kinds - slathered with creamy icing. We sat on a table next to someone with 5 slices on his plate - for breakfast - sugar being the source of energy needed for a day on the slots. Diners were shiny and chrome edged - just like the movies. One of the most delicious meals was a gorgeous brunch eggs, bacon with maple syrup - gasp! - followed by apple Brown Betty in a snow covered, picket fenced, wooden gingerbread housed small town called Geneva outside Chicago. Everywhere felt like walking through a movie set. Wayne Thiebaud American Still Life @courtauld conjured up that early trip for me. He used his paint like icing lavishing it over the canvas in appetising colours to paint food, diners, delis and pinball machines - only in America. #painting #waynethiebaud #foodpainting #cake by @joortmans
Had a fascinating evening on Monday - #internationaldayforeliminationofviolenceagainstwomen @richardsaltoungallery to see @wilmaworks being interviewed by @hettiejudah about her current work ‘Temple of Safety’. Based on The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, #templeofsafety lays out 16 articles that ‘define a person’s rights within a relationship’. Woolf has worked with experts in the field of domestic abuse, police detectives specialising in abuse, victims of domestic abuse and charities that work in this area. Her work ‘Domestic’, (@mafineartcsm 2020), an installation of 8 plates - 1 per year from 2012, that showed the number of women killed during that year, what relation to the killer and how they were killed, This is the first time data on the taking of women’s lives by men they know had been gathered together. Since then ‘Domestic’ has been shown at The Houses of Parliament t, discussed with policy makers who, under the LabourGovernment, have designed policies relations specifically to this subject for the first time in 20 years. #templeofsafety is currently on billboards and advertising vans each with one of the articles. Wilma Woolf will be working on the project for the foreseeable future through discussions and making objects aligned with each article. She would like access for the charter to be available to all. Her aim was to produce something that would be clear, rational and fair and impossible, embarrassing for anyone to call unreasonable. The artist is brave (given the vile threats received by women who are campaigning for women now) and brilliant. There is another talk on Saturday and it is really worth going along too. #campaigningartist #fightforwomensrights by @joortmans
@harryortmans and I went to @barbicancentre to see ‘Dirty Looks - Desire and Decay in Fashion’ - an exhibition that explores beauty from a different angle. While I worked at @csm_news, I saw students from Fashion, Jewellery, Textiles, Art, Product etc. increasingly explore the use and reuse of waste and materials from nature to create work. While this was more affordable and readily available for students, it also required innovation, imagination, craft, time and energy to turn into beautiful, creative, meaningful and usable outcomes. It was no surprise to see so many graduates - recent and past, in this show. The work in the textiles and reuse of old garments here is so intricate and exquisite and the presentation so magical and poetic ( look at Ma Ke’s installationset on a floor of red earth with a screen showing extraordinary photographs of her collection) it truly overwhelms and dazzles the viewer. Not to be missed by lovers of fashion, textiles, craft and beauty. The first picture is one of the first in the exhibition and it is by Hussein Chalayan and possibly my favourite - look closely at the battered 1920s dress cut up and placed amongst the worn layers of tulle and cotton, a vintage cotton camisole bound onto the body with a worn leather bodice. From his 2001 collection in which he revisited his buried garments of his graduation, he once again made the most beautiful clothes and buried them somehow adding dark glamour to them. As we left #pamplona we saw families and small groups of people wearing symbols of Gaza and carrying flags walking towards the outskirts of the town to meet up with the group of peaceful protesters you see here. Grannies and Grandpas, children, teenagers and everyone between showing their love and care for the people of Gaza as any normal human being should a of course. How on earth has this care become an illegal activity in the Uk while the ghastly, hatefull (and I mean full of hate) divisive white nationalists been allowed to spread their grotesque brand of patriotism while @ukgovofficial and the Royals prepare to meet the overlord of bigotry and greed and his henchmen and enablers in this country? How has this happened??? Everyone deserves to live safely wherever that may be for them and if in many immigrants case that is the uK instead of their birthplace then so be it. We do not own land - we are custodians of it for a while at best. #allyouneedislove #peoplematter #stopthegenocide by @joortmans
A snapshot of @loose_music takeover of #buddys @thelongroadfest. MC @tom__bridgewater pulled together a brilliant playlist for the day - a bumper year - starting with @birdsflyingbackwards then @greazy_alice @gilllandry and his evocative guitar playing conjuring horse riding in the range - and ending with @dannythechamp. The intervening acts are here and a smattering of festival Americana fashion if course. I’m amazed that I manage to leave without cowboy boots and/or a Stetson every year but loved seeing them on everybody else along with daisy dukes. Lots of white lace and leopard this year. However have focused on other looks in my pics. - 1-3 @bobbie_music French country singer - of course she’s French - look at that headscarf and her band members were just as cool but most importantly her music is great and her voice is stunning. 4 - loved this family watching Bobbie - Dad and their little boy in matching plaid shirts and mum wearing the perfect cowboy hat with that floral dress - a bit more #carrie in #AJLT chic than Little House on the Prairie. 5 - these green boots are a great alternative to all the cowboy boots 6 - great set from The Rocking Birds 7 - Hannah dancing to the legendary Canadian singer/songwriter Bonnie Dobson and @thehangingstars - love her hairstyle 8 - Bonnie Dobson looking not unlike Isabelle Huppert - just as cool. If you need reminding listen to her 1962 song ‘Morning Dew’ covered by many but most famously, The Grateful Dead 9 - Look out for ‘Dreams, the album by Bonnie Dobson and the Hanging Stars 10 and 11 - 2 more great looks 12 MC, @tom__bridgewater @loose_music - what a day, Tom!! Thanks for having us 🍺 - #thelongroadfestival #stanfordhouse #countrymusic #americana #musicfestival #stetsons by @joortmans
We had a #dayout at @ntbasildonpark @nationaltrust - a stunning house that while being a fine example of 18th century Palladian architecture by John Carr, is also a fabulous blend of original interiors brilliantly restored in the 1950s by its new owner and her personal love for contemporary country house style. The curtains are wildly extravagant, I love the 50s bark cloth soft furnishings and outrageous chintzes. The colours of the reception room are seriously elegant and restrained 18th century but also somehow glamorous and what about that flower basket???!! The pink bedroom is dreamy and I love the starry bathroom. All gorgeous and much more fun than most restorations of the period. The Graham Sutherland room - imagine?! - shows his sketches for Coventry Cathedral which is next on my list. By the way - is the textile on the seat by David Hicks? It’s used in several of the rooms and I love it. And by the way, it was used as Netherfield Park in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice with Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley - also Downton, Bridgestone etc. etc. - #palladianarchitecture #basildonpark #1950style #countryhousestyle #interiordesign #windowdecor #chintz by @joortmans
