THE WEDNESDAY ARCHIVES
— THE NIGHTMARE COUSINS —

Meet the darlings of House Wednesday: Gabriele Wednesday and Imani Illyn Velesov. Alluring, brilliant, and catastrophically dangerous.

Bound by blood, united in violence, and devoted to one another in that rather unsettling Wednesday fashion. They are each other’s accomplices, confidants, and favourite bad influence.

A word of advice? Pray you catch their attention for the right reasons.

THE WEDNESDAY ARCHIVES
“House Wednesday — Two Bloodlines. One House.”

Meet Gabriele Wednesday and Imani Velesov.
Two members of House Wednesday, a family with enough political, medical, and military influence to make most governments suddenly remember they have somewhere else to be.

One is a genius. The other is Vice Captain of the Rozen Kronas. Both are brilliant, ruthlessly capable, and exceptionally good at finding solutions, particularly the sort that leave very little need for a second attempt.

They are intelligent. They are influential. They are dangerous. Which is terribly inconvenient for anyone who happens to be their problem.

01 — OFF DUTY
PERSONNEL: MORTEM, OSSEOUS
STATUS: OFF DUTY

He likes money.
He simply has very little affection for the labor required to acquire it.

Osseous Mortem inherited his position within KRYOR alongside the obligations of House Mortem. He would much rather spend his days doing almost anything else, preferably somewhere no one can find him.

Unfortunately, retirement is expensive.

Until then, he works.

02 — ON DUTY
KRYOR CORP.
RESTRICTED ACCESS
PERSONNEL: MORTEM, OSSEOUS
POSITION: CHIEF ENGINEER

When duty calls, Osseous answers.

Not enthusiastically. Not promptly, if he can help it.
But he answers.

As Chief Engineer, Osseous oversees KRYOR’s engineering division. The position may have been inherited, but the work cannot be.

He complains. He delegates. He disappears whenever possible. And when something actually needs to be done, he does it properly.

THE MORTEM ARCHIVES
A LETTER FROM EVANS — “TO OSSEOUS”
“A PERFECT DAY”

Today is a perfect day. Disgusting, I know. After all these years, you’d think I’d have developed better standards, but apparently perfection is simply having my nephew walking beside me.

You’ve grown, Osseous. Inconveniently so. I rather liked you small, easier to protect, easier to carry, and far less likely to argue with me. But here you are, becoming the man I always knew you would be.

One day, you’ll become the heir. You’ll carry the Mortem name and everything that comes with it. But today, you’re still my nephew. My boy. My prodigy, my accomplice, and my favorite little catastrophe.

And if one day you walk somewhere I cannot follow, I’ll simply have to be offended about it for a very long time.

So walk with me, just for today.

Tomorrow, you can become the heir. Today, you’re still my nephew. And today is perfect.

-Evans.

THE MORTEM ARCHIVES
A LETTER FROM EVANS — “TO ACIDALIA”

Dear Acidalia,

I suppose I should say something profound about the empire we built and the years we spent making it what it became. But you were never fond of sentimental speeches.

So, simply: you did well, old friend.

Now you leave the chair, and Osseous waits to inherit it, your grandson, your heir, and apparently my next responsibility.

Try not to frighten him too much.

With affection,
Evans

P.S. Your joints are not getting any younger.

THE MORTEM ARCHIVES
THE PHOTOGRAPHS -
“THE FORMER EARL ACIDALIA MORTEM”

Every empire has an ending. Most involve war, betrayal, or someone getting dramatically stabbed. House Mortem got a retirement party.

After turning death into a business, the business into a fortune, and the fortune into a dynasty, Acidalia Mortem finally stepped down as Earl. There were flowers, champagne, speeches, and an heir waiting in the wings: Osseous Mortem. The old Earl surrendered his seat not to an enemy, nor to fate, but to the unfortunate reality that eventually someone else has to deal with everything you’ve built.

The empire remained. The Earl retired. The mess, naturally, was inherited.

Welcome to House Mortem.

THE MORTEM ARCHIVES
Portrait No. 002— THE UNDERTAKER
“ACIDALIA MORTEM”

While other men dreamed of building empires from gold, Acidalia built his from coffins. Where others saw mourning, he saw opportunity; where others feared the dead, he welcomed them.

One funeral parlor became two, two became an enterprise, and an enterprise became a fortune. And a fortune, as history has so often demonstrated, is merely an empire waiting for a sufficiently ambitious heir.

Thus began House Mortem.

Not with a crown, not with a war, nor with divine favor but with a funeral.

AN INVITATION TO MORTEM

You are cordially invited to welcome the newest Earl of Mortem, though judging by his expression, he may have mistaken the occasion for an invitation to tea.

INTERMISSION…
“The Favorite Uncle”
-as told by Osseous Mortem

My uncle, Evans.

If you’ve been expecting another portrait of a Mortem, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait.
This is something considerably worse.

“Family.”

Evans Rache:
Beautiful. Mysterious. Probably not entirely human.
My favorite paranormal anomaly, oldest accomplice, and the one man I would choose over almost anyone.
Even my wife. (Gabriele knows. She married me anyway. Poor woman.)

Some souls simply collide and refuse to separate.
Call it devotion. Call it madness.

I call it Uncle Evans.

MORTEM ARCHIVES
“THE HEIRS”

Once upon a time, there were three boys.

One read.
One worried.
One smiled.

They belonged to a family that had already made its fortune among the dead. They simply hadn’t learned yet what the living would demand of them.

Then came the will.

Childhood gave way to inheritance.
Inheritance gave way to power. And the three Mortem brothers became precisely what their name had always intended them to be.

Heirs to the dead. Masters of what came after.
