Spent my whole life being told I was “too much” and believing it…only later to learn that being labeled “too much” just means the person/people you’re around don’t have capacity to hold, understand or truly celebrate you. Also, if you’re “too much” how can you possibly be controlled? Better to nip that in the bud and try to make that person feel as though their being-ness isn’t being done “correctly”…When someone is in witness of a person resting in their fullest illumination that person either becomes a doorway or a road block for the other - and neither has anything to do with that person standing in their truth. Here to report that allowing your wild parts to express is the great revolution, joy is a revolution. People and systems who demand you shrink and change shape to be more palatable is due to their own discomfort and its birthed systems of oppression, dominance and supremacy for generations. “the tunnel + the light” - my first full length album is now available on all streaming platforms!!! If you’ve been riding with me for a while, you know how monumentous this moment is. Words fall short, but here goes…“the tunnel + the light” is a record about finding your freedom and all of the distractions along the way. it says it’s ok to be messy. the point of this whole life thing is to learn and love and care and accept yourself through it. the point is to grow. to find your freedom. to create. to be. to live authentically. from this place, of deep self care, we heal the world. listen when you feel alone. when you’re moving through something big and in of need comfort. when you need to wallow and everyone is hell bent on telling you to get over it. when you feel yourself start to self destruct. when you’re too far gone. when the people around you aren’t genuinely supportive of your well being. when you’re in need of redirection. when you’re ready to lift yourself up, break old patterns and liberate yourself. when motivation and inspiration feel like medicine. when you’re ready to write a story that feels like coming home.Thanks so much for being here. I used to think pausing wasn’t possible. That if I slowed down I’d lose access to something vital…The truth I’ve learned is that unless there is an actual emergency happening (which there rarely is)…slowing down and pausing when it feels like I *can’t* is the medicine every time, right on time. I wrote this track about the discomfort of slowing down and also the vast connection we have to self when we make the courageous choice to do so. I slipped and fell into sync work by way of following the music. It’s one of those things that I look back on now and see the path so clearly, but back then I was just a songwriter and artist living in LA, hustling to figure out how I was gunna make a career as a creative in the music industry. It felt messy, now it reads linear - the present has a funny way of making sense of the past. Back in 2017 I got a cut on RAC’s album EGO and I played a few tour dates with Andre and his band at the time. After a show at @brooklynsteel his drummer @jeffreybrodsky asked me if I had a pub deal, to which I replied, “no” and that opened the door to the next chapter of my life. The two of us created a side project together, aptly named CURIO, and within a few months some of our songs took off, landing syncs with big brands like Google, Target, Apple, Dolce & Gabbana, Crocs, the list is pretty extensive at this point and we’ve been writing together on this project ever since.Safe to say there are near endless ways to “make it” in the music industry - none of them are easy, all of them take dedicated, consistent work and endurance, but I’m just here to say that “fame” is not a barometer for success and the path really does reveal itself to you one step at a time - so keep taking steps.I rarely share this type of content here, but figured I’d pull the curtain back and reveal the human behind the wizard of oz because this work has sustained me throughout the years while also granting me the freedom to continue my work as an artist without so much pressure and expectation. The music industry is so much smoke and mirrors, I much prefer sharing my journey where and when I can these days. Sometimes I’m on a long drive lost in a feeling and a @juliajacklin song will come on and I can’t help, but dissolve into the track because her songwriting hits on something so true and resonant it jolts you into a sense of connectedness and aliveness.In those moments I’m gifted a sense of relief because the mere existence of this piece of music serves as a beacon that reminds me that I’m not alone or isolated in my experiences. I think this is the function of art and the role of an artist. To allow yourself to get so immersed in your individual experiencing that you create from a raw feeling that then taps into the shared experience of the collective.Art, at its core, is a means to connect - to oneself and the greater community at large. I’m so inspired by lyricists that aren’t afraid to say the vulnerable thing, the thing most of us keep tucked away inside. This song got stuck in my head and I had to immediately run to my piano upon getting home and play it out. Music as medicine type ish. I know a lot of us have been through som sh*t and the state of the world right now near constantly challenges us to stay present, stay in our bodies, stay awake *AND* I also believe in the transformative power of prioritizing joy, of being silly, of making time to laugh and be creative and be with community…Here to say that maybe being silly with your friends is a sacred act. A ritual of the utmost importance. Not numbing ourselves out, but cultivating ways of being that lets us slough off the gunk so we can show up more present, more resourced and with more capacity to take on whatever life throws our way. I spent a lot of my life trying to make things work that weren’t working…and as I’ve grown up and acquired more wisdom, I’ve learned that living from a space of fear is what keeps you stuck in places you no longer belong. Sometimes the hard choice really is the one that supports your well being…I’m here to report, from experience, that making the choice that supports your well being supports everyone involved (even when it’s the unpopular choice and it doesn’t feel like it at first)…Giving from an empty cup doesn’t serve anyone and staying in dynamics that bring out the worst in you without a willingness to grow together is surely a layer in hell that Dante missed. When the bit is existing as a human being on planet earth, committing to that bit just means committing to myself…in all of the unique marvelousness that makes me, me…It’s releasing the reigns, it’s holding things looser, it’s finding the cosmic joke amidst the rubble and letting myself laugh amongst disappointment and pain. It’s curbing the desire to control and allowing myself to be present with what is, trusting that whatever is here for me now is just something to *experience* and hold myself through, and, if I’m really lucky // attuned, I may even learn something about myself that sparks profound growth, understanding or greater alignment… Committing to the bit goes beyond the binary of “good” and “bad” - it’s just being present and connected enough to decide how I want to interact at any given moment with what’s right there, in front me, now.
