Wishing everyone a very happy and belated Thanksgiving!

Outside of writing, one of my favourite things to do is to cook and to entertain. This has been a rough year so I really haven’t done a whole lot of it, but it felt so good to be back in the kitchen!

Really thankful for all the support I’ve had this year, especially from the amazing teams @simonkids, @walkerbooksuk and @rocaeditorialjoven. And, of course, for the brilliant podcasters, reviewers, and blog hosts who have given me the opportunity to share my story to chat about my books. And last - but never least! - to my fabulous readers. I love hearing from you guys and appreciate every single one of you!

This is the opening line to my first book, Theodora Hendrix and the Monstrous League of Monsters. I distinctly remember lying in bed on a Saturday morning; it was not yet 6 AM - an ungodly hour - and the line just popped into my head. Within an hour, I had leapt out of bed, grabbed my laptop, and began writing what would become my first published novel (and my second manuscript. Amazingly, that first line remained the opening of the book!

From my perspective, first lines are SO important; it’s the first time a reader is meeting you as a writer and can either away then to keep reading or to put your book down in favor of another. With this in mind, here’s a few things to consider when approaching your book’s opening:

1. Grab their attention! Your first line must make a reader yearn to know more.
2. Introduce your voice, tone, mood or any combination thereof. If you’re writing a mystery, the opening should hint at this. A comedy? The same goes.
3. Start in the middle: we need to be thrust right into the action. Back story can be woven in throughout.
4. Hint at the conflict to come.
5. State the theme: the first line should let us know something about the heart of the story - I.E. the lesson a character needs to learn - or unlearn.

When it first occurred to me that I might like to be a published author, I devoured every resource I could find. I hadn’t majored in creative writing or English at college / university, and I was currently working in finance at a major bank. I knew very little about the art of crafting a novel - and that’s where Writer’s Digest came in. No joke, over the course of one year I think I read every single article on their website! (There’s so many awesome - and did I mention, free? - resources there and I would encourage any aspiring writer to check it out for great tips, how tos, industry insights, etc.) So, to find myself featured in one of their articles some ten years later was so surreal; I felt as if I’d come full circle. It was so awesome, and I hope you enjoy!

Hi there! I’ve been SUPER quiet, so I wanted to take a minute to reintroduce myself:

My name is Jordan Kopy, and I’m the author of the “Theodora Hendrix” series, a middle grade trilogy which follows the (mis)adventures of ten-year-old Theodora Hendrix, a human living amongst monsters. Theodora isn’t too scarred by her monstrous upbringing, but when someone discovers her secret, she’s got to act fast to discover who the culprit is. Loving these beautiful flowers from @madeleinemilburn to celebrate the release of THEODORA HENDRIX AND THE SNARE OF THE SHADOWMONGERS! These are now 10 days old and still thriving! The trick is to keep changing the water, cutting the stems, and pruning any blooms which have wilted. Aren’t they just lovely? This is such a bittersweet and deeply special moment; I’ve been a bit of a mess all day. I can’t believe that I’ve reached the end of Theodora’s journey, nor am I quite ready to say goodbye to her and the cast of characters who have lived in my head these past few years. If you would have told me three years ago that my story about a ten-year-old girl being raised by a family of monsters would be traditionally published as a series, I wouldn’t have believed you. The fact that I have three books out in the world is surreal. I wrote the first on a whim, in between drafts of another novel, and the story took hold. I have loved every minute of it and am so grateful for the opportunity to share Theodora’s adventures with all of you 🕸 If you have purchased or shared any of the books, left a review (these tremendously help little-known authors gain traction, especially on sites like Amazon which are driven by algorithm!), reposted my updates on any of my social media channels, or had a kind word to spare, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know that you helped make someone’s dreams come true 🕸
