An analysis of Grant Green’s #guitarsolo on “Cool Blues”. This was assigned to me by @nborton1 a while back as an example of the “quintessential major blues” sound. Grant is great to study because he’s an example of how to take a limited amount of jazz vocabulary and deploy it across different contexts. A life and work update as I round the corner on 34. This summer was really busy, but I have a nice bit of cushion built up as I pivot back to focusing more on polishing and practicing/advancing rather than playing. For the first time since I pivoted to music full time in 2024, quality of work, optimization, and automation are priorities before trying to expand revenue. I’d like some more of my regular life back, like hobbies. Now that music is not my hobby I need to cultivate something else. Also weekends, I miss those. I made this video because I want everyone who sets aside time to come hang with us to have the tools they need to have fun. We try to be as open and welcoming as possible, but if the first and second concepts in this video are a stretch for you it may be difficult for you to participate in the conversation. Full time musicians have been with us since the advent of specialization via the development of agriculture. No hate to @musicmindsmatter , but opinions like this that normalize the theft of profit from musicians only support big industry actors like Spotify, Apple and Livenation that separate musicians from the profit their music creates. The industry generates over $32 billion of profit a year but musicians see a fraction of that surplus value because of anti-competitive practices and monopolies in the ways music is distributed or engaged with. If the people at the top of these companies compensated their artists properly rather than spending all their money in the past five years trying to replace us with AI then there would be more room for full time musicians again. Don’t excuse current conditions as “normal”, this is abnormal and caused by bad governance/monopolization. Musicians don’t just deserve to have this small of a share in the surplus value they create. #music #musicianlife taken in Denver, Colorado by @jordanlovinger
