As parents, we celebrate our kids’ firsts. We post about them. We take pictures. We write about them in holiday cards.

What rarely gets documented? The lasts.

Because often, we don’t know it’s the last time. I wrote this piece about the last Halloween I went trick-or-treating with my kids. Or, more accurately, the first Halloween I didn’t—and the realization that I’d missed our last one.

My new essay is up on @scarymommy. 🎃🧡 Link in bio. 📷 credit to royal photog and dear friend @abcalof taken in Hancock Park, Los Angeles by @jordanroterauthor

As a born and bred New York City girl, getting a Shouts & Murmurs piece into The New Yorker has always been my white whale. I could not be more excited, thrilled, and honored to become a @newyorkermag contributor and thank you @emmaewallen for being a wonderful editor! by @jordanroterauthor

HAPPIEST PUB DAY to my pal @fran_hauser and her new book TWENTY MINUTES IS THE NEW HOUR which is a smart, funny, delightful-to-read guide to harnessing our most valuable commodity: time.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy this summer (slide #2), and I have news: IT WORKS!

For evidence, please see slide #3: reading the book on the beach. On a weekday. Because I HAD ALREADY FINISHED MY WORK!

Fran is one of those people who does so much for other women, authors, and readers — through her fab store @bedfordbooks_ and just by being Fran so it makes me especially happy that we get to celebrate HER.

And I can’t wait to interview Fran at @zibbysbookshop in LA on October 22! Buy the book now and Come see us in October — I promise to get all my work done first. ❤️📚 taken in Bedford Books by @jordanroterauthor

This weekend’s chapter: Zibby’s LA Retreat! I was on a panel with the hilarious and whipsmart @laura.tremaine and @annabellegurwitch1 , moderated by the inimitable @zibbyowens —whose new book BETWEEN CHAPTERS just published and is, very appropriately, about opening our minds and hearts to all the chapters we move through, and sharing those experiences (good/bad/ugly/beautiful/all of the above) with others.

There were friends I was so happy to see, like fellow author @tesssanchezgreenfield and momfluencer Amanda Brown @type__a__mom (check out her aptly named “Type A Mom’s Trusted Tips” Substack), and getting to hang with authors I have long admired @gabriellekorn @lauradaveauthor and @sarahmlynowski

And then there were all the new friends I made, including but definitely not limited to: @kymshowerslifecoach who I hope to look like when I become a grandmother (or, honestly, now); @jeaninewilhite who has already signed up for my writing retreat in Chamonix in June and sold me on making a trip to Bend, Oregon (check out her Substack Books and Boundaries); @pberro who shared so much about raising daughters with learning differences; and @carolyngcurtis , my ride-or-die for the four-block journey from @thehuntleyhotel on a Friday night. I really so enjoyed meeting everyone.

I came away from the retreat with new friends, a stack of new books, and a full heart. Huge thanks always to @tangerme and @gracasbookparties for organizing and making everything run so seamlessly, and to @zibbyowens and @zibbysbookshop for their passionate and tireless support of authors and books—and, in particular, of MOMS LIKE US and me. 🐻❤️ taken in Zibby's Bookshop by @jordanroterauthor

Before Body Positivity. Before Peloton. Before peptides.

There was 14-year-old me in Seventeen magazine, with my textbooks precariously strapped to my thighs to “smooth” my non-saddle-baggy “saddlebags.”

Against all odds, I managed to absorb the text in these books through my thighs. Thank you, @brownu for recognizing this.

Fellow Gen Xers: we’ve been through a lot. Let’s keep wearing our jean shorts. We’ve earned it. 😘

As my daughter’s final summer of seven-week sleepaway camp comes to an end—and with it, her tenure as a camper—I have a lot of feelings.

I feel sad because I know how much she has loved it. I feel sad because seven weeks without screens is the greatest gift, and never again will she be able to unplug like that or for that long. And I feel sad because, in a world of constant communication and accessibility, there is something wonderful about knowing my daughter is happy and safe and, that for a short period of time, will only contact me if something is actually wrong or the call has been scheduled ahead of time.

But mostly, I feel grateful. She has loved every summer and has chosen to go back until she is almost seventeen.

But there is another thing: the photographs. So many photographs. These are the photos I wait for every night, refreshing the Campanion app with a frequency I would prefer not to disclose. Not just because I miss her. I do. But because most of them are candid. They aren’t the curated TikToks, filtered Snapchats, posed mirror selfies. They catch her when she doesn’t care how she looks, when she is fully present in her life.

They’ve caught her in moments of sheer, unadulterated joy. They’ve caught her sliding down a grassy hill on a Slip ’N Slide covered in bubbles and entangled in her friends’ limbs. They’ve caught her mid-cheer, mid-swim, mid-goal looking wild and excited and completely present and slightly deranged in the best possible way.

I love these pictures more than any others I have of her. Because for a second, I get to see her not as my daughter, but as her own person out in the world. I often look at her and think she is the poster child for Darwinism: proof that the next generation can take your genetic material and make significant—and much-needed—upgrades.

She has a life that is increasingly her own. Which is, in fact, what I have spent all these years raising her to have.

But every night for seven weeks, camp gave me tiny glimpses into that life. So Thank you @tripplakecamp for this summer and every summer before it. taken in Tripp Lake Camp by @jordanroterauthor

Sometimes when I’m running on the beach and no one’s around and a great song comes on, I just start dancing. Yeah, I’m that person. Today I felt like I was being watched. Turns out…I was. 🦌 taken in Quogue, New York by @jordanroterauthor
