I met @praskivitti in Cheboksari in 2021 and he told me about his youth, how the people would dress in their traditional costumes and sing Chuvash songs about the Volga, how hypnotising that was and how his biggest dream was to see with his own eyes what they were singing about - the Volga. But they lived 85 kilometers away from the river, there were no buses and it was too far to walk. Only after high school he applied to the art college in Cheboksari where he finally came to see his childhood dream.

Praski Vitti was a wonderful artist and a kind man. I learned with sadness of his passing.

Good to be a contributor for the 10th issue of the magazine „Heft“ about local press photography from the 80s and the 90s in Rorschach.
It was a wild throwback, looking through my archives with @eisbuero Adrian Elsener.
Also contributing Lukas Unseld and D-J Stieger.
Presentation this Saturday 10.30am at Hafenbuffet in Rorschach.

near.takeover – introducing new members! 💙

Hi, my name is Jorma Mueller @jormamueller and I am doing the takeover.

In 2022 I organised a street-art exhibition on the Volga with the intention of returning the works from „Their Soul Runs Beneath“ to their place of origin. It is a project in itself with the name „Silent River - Течет река“, which brings the Volga even more into play as the main actor and as a quiet observer.
My friend Sveta, a journalist from the local newspaper, wrote: „The astonishing feeling of familiarity and of recollection when looking at photos of places one has never been to, the faces of strangers. There is something common, universal, native for many people in these images which have recently appeared in Samara.“

The street-art project has its own website:

Hi, my name is Jorma Mueller @jormamueller and I am doing this week’s takeover.

Why Russia? - people would often ask me. Well, like Maggie Nelson in her Bluets, I never know how to respond: „We don’t get to choose what or whom we love. […] We just don’t get to choose.“
My inherited link as a half Finn may not suffice for such love, but what about the long embedded scent of a gang of birch trees? Or the observation of a deeply moved radiance of joy, muted by seemingly long-familiar melancholy? The crystalizing of air when breathing through the nose at minus thirty?

Hi, my name is Jorma Mueller @jormamueller and I am doing this week’s takeover.

In 2023, my dear friend and collaborator on parts of this journey, Anna Nistratova @microcalculator, said to me: „Do you realize that all the images have been taken before the war and that now people will never look the same?“
A most sad observation, but one that confirmed to me that Anna was seeing just what I wanted to show between the pictures.

Hi, my name is Jorma Mueller @jormamueller and I am doing this week’s takeover.

„Their Soul Runs Beneath“ is the title of a series I started in winter 2017 on the Volga River, returning repeatedly over the following 5 years. I often had the feeling to be afloat, and I never really knew where the journey would take me as I collected faces and places.

While many creators like to tell a story, I was interested in capturing a collective force, not that of a society, a class or a culture, but the anima of a people formed over centuries encircled by the energy of a river.

There it is, the little meteorite from my inner galaxy. If Hippocrates is to be believed, my melancholic humor, or temperament, comes from black bile.
After a recent cholecystectomy which revealed a black gall stone, it seems that for me the theory is valid,)
