Getting my works out of the kiln!

Excited to share the final results from the latest firing! These are the foundational whistles I built right before diving into the sonic mask series.

If you work with ceramic instruments, you know the sound you hear when the clay is raw isn't the final tone. Firing all the way up to 1250°C causes the clay to shrink, which actually pushes the pitch higher-usually shifting up by a semitone or even a full tone on the scale. Love hearing how much these evolve once they come

out of the kiln!

I want to show you all what I usually teach before we get into making a Sonic Mask:
Punkuy Whistle: The easiest and simplest to make. It’s just a sphere with a hole, and you can add finger holes to change the pitch. In the video, I’m demonstrating a whale-shaped Punkuy whistle.
Primitive Whistle: An evolution of the Punkuy, this uses the same principle but adds an airway (windway) to direct your breath straight to the sound mechanism.
Advanced Whistle: The peak of sound technology for Pre-Hispanic clay wind instruments.
Jaguar & Death Whistles: Special Mexican whistles designed for noise-based effects. These are used to make scary, creepy, or atmospheric sounds like the wind. Fun fact: many dogs and other animals really dislike these sounds!
I invite you all to learn with me!

During all my classes, we start with foundational whistles to learn how to craft many different varieties. It ends up being a joy to play them once you have made a few!

We normally cover three basic whistles and two special ones. If time permits, we explore one or more additional whistle designs. I am happy to share my knowledge of sound instrument design here in China. I always meet wonderful, thoughtful students, and many fresh ideas emerge from our exchanges. I am here to guide you in creating your best work!

I will miss my students and to teach in China while I am in Europe, so I hope to see you all at the end of August.

Made some new things and learned a whole bunch about how to make whistles and aerophones with @josecbs_404 at @7000sqm. You’ll have to take his class in the future to learn about the specifics. All of this is leading up to creating masks that can also produce sound.

In today’s class, we learned about how to make a pucuy (or punkuy) and a primitive whistle. There’s a lot of theory about how resonance works and how the shape and direction of both the airflow and the holes will alter pitch. There’s a lot more to learn and i’m excited for what comes next.

Final result tomorrow!! I made a mask into an instrument! it’s still under construction since I need to do more surface decoration but I think it’s at a good place rn with @josecbs_404 sonic mask workshop. I made this inspired by an antelope skull with forward facing ey holes to be more predatory, but I think it still reads a bit like a ceramic antelope skull.

The surface decoration is going to be done in a peking opera style mask which I think will contrast nicely with the skull texture. Stay tuned if you wanna see the result!

After a hard working week teaching a master class about wind ceramic instruments of Latinamerica in the morning and glazing in the nights I got my latest Tiger mask inspired by the Sabertooth Tiger. I wanted to summon a very ancient and powerful force on it. As it has been 2 years since I sold my first Jaguar Mask, that made me kinda famous in Jingdezhen, China.
But moreover than that I always felt a certain spirit of protection in my journey.

This mask has a jaguar whistle, plus two double flutes hidden in the fangs of the tiger.
