Luna BB is an instrumental piece I wrote to process grief; parting with people, places, and companions who leave their mark on our lives. Originally composed for a documentary, it was later reimagined as a tribute to cherished moments, to Luna, a little dog who brought joy during a difficult time, and to Lobo, whose presence and memory continue to guide me. Today, it’s also dedicated to all the dogs who’ve been part of my life, and to all those companions who have shared space with me.

I hope it brings peace to those who listen.

When I was asked to help produce and compose a live session for Shinpei Takeda and Ghost Magnet Roach Motel, I was immediately ready to jump into the studio. I gathered some of the best musicians I know and had a listening session of GMRM's body of work. I told the band that the goal was to create an interpretation of GMRM's unique experimental noiz sound, and to record it in a live session for it to be used in one of Shinpei's films. The result is a 19 minute jazz noiz experimental wall of sound. (I believe Shin only used seconds of it.)

This was in 2019 and after the session I gave the tracks and stems to Shin. 6 years later I opened up the session again and after listening to it I decided to mix it myself and master it. I am very happy with the result and now have decided to share it with everyone. To me music captures moments in time, and music like this captures the way I felt, distorted guitars, layered with sinth strings, reverbs and delays. If I tried again I couldn't do it the same.

The live performance compiles several scenes, going through ambient tones and free noise. It makes me wonder. In a puritan state, where everyone is self righteous, where we surveil and betray each other, how does a community grow and protect itself from itself. What are your crimes? by @josemarlandia

Some documentation takes years to share; not because it wasn't meaningful, but because it was too meaningful.

In 2022 I spent time with a group of young kids at the Border Line Crisis Shelter @borderlinecrisiscenter in Tijuana, Mexico - facilitating VR sessions where we built digital illustrations and virtual sculptures of our homes and the places we carry inside us. Stories that connect us as humans.

One kid — I'll call him Goku — made it through every session. On our last day together, his family received news that their asylum had been granted and would be able to reconnect with the rest of their family. This was a beautiful gift and a way to close out our sessions together.

I went home that day and cried out of joy. Sometimes it feels like we can never close circles - and at that time I was able to experience one.

I'm sharing this now because this work is part of who I am — and because the people who show up for others, quietly and consistently, deserve to be seen.

A space for joy inside impossible circumstances — support the work of @borderlinecrisiscenter a humanitarian shelter for women and children in Tijuana doing this every single day.

Shout out to Judith for showing up everyday. And to all the volunteers and people at the shelter who make this happen. by @josemarlandia

Thank you to everyone who joined us on opening night — a room full of conversation, connection, and people ready to look closer at the surveillance systems that look at us.
The exhibition is still up. Come see it.

Surveillance systems are designed to be invisible — to embed themselves so seamlessly into our streets, devices, and shared spaces that we stop noticing them entirely. Data Breach examines how surveillance technologies reshape daily life. Opening during the city budget hearings, we see how government authorities have leveraged these not in service of public safety but in pursuit of profit-driven agendas that routinely violate the rights of the communities they claim to protect.

Artists, activists, writers, and poets from The AJA Project’s WHO WATCHES WHO fellowship. Their work is on the walls. Come walk through it.

If you want to stay informed or go deeper, we’ll be hosting ongoing programming and workshops around these topics. Follow along for updates.

A look back at the systems watching you.

Surveillance is designed to be invisible; embedded so seamlessly into our streets, devices, and shared spaces that we stop noticing it entirely. This exhibition asks us to look again.

The AJA Project`s WHO WATCHES WHO fellows; artists, activists, writers, and poets present Data Breach, a collective exhibition examining the reach of surveillance technologies, how they reshape daily life, and who they actually serve. The exhibition is the culmination of the 3 month fellowship and the participants work.

This spring, the City of San Diego proposed sweeping cuts to arts funding - while investment in surveillance continues to grow.
