This area has so many photographic possibilities that I will have to return. I had scouted the shores of this 5-mile-long freshwater lake the day before. I picked out a few spots that I thought might work, depending on what the sunrise would do the next morning. The good pre-sunrise colors require you to be in your spot 45 minutes before sunrise. With rubber boots on, I chose one of the pre-planned wet, marshy spots from the previous day. The sky kept changing, as it always does, and this was the ultimate moment from that morning.

The winding nature of this narrow dirt road grabbed my attention one afternoon while scouting. I just had to come back the next morning before sunrise to capture it without any of the distracting daytime highlights. I was there to photograph the sand dunes and marshes, but this little road was a big bonus. I love it.

This large sand dune on the left allowed me to include a large portion of the beach, which was different from the other sand dune compositions I had captured. The beaches in North Florida are very wide, which gives them a totally different look from other places.

The soft light from the sun rising off to the left was perfect lighting for these two dunes. The soft light on the water and in the sky brought it all together. Sunrise at the beach is a wonderous time to be there.

This unusual section of a rocky coast near Jensen Beach has so many compositional possibilities. On this particular morning, I wanted to place the sunrise beams between two major rock outcroppings. This provided a perfect balance.

The sun was rising off to the left, and its light on the dunes and the sky behind them had a very light, soft and pastel effect on the scene. It was unexpected but beautiful. Sunrise is such an amazing time to photograph.

I had driven past this scene many times as the conditions were just not right. Finally, the morning came with just the right clouds exploding over the marsh. The way a section of the marsh came to a point is what makes the scene really work. I returned the next few mornings, but it was never anywhere near as stunning.

I really enjoy shooting this unusual section of Florida’s east coast. There are so many possibilities. On this morning, I decided to get down low and include the entire curve of the rocks to "surround" the sunrise.
