THE MOOD IS: KRISTINA TELFAR @josesitolapaz

Black. White. No gray area.

For The Mood Is Ball: Kiki Edition, Kristina Telfar steps into the world of Joseph McRae in a look that plays with proportion, movement, and attitude. Bold stripes. Exaggerated form. A silhouette that refuses to disappear into the room.

This is Kristina’s mood.

I’m happy to announce that I recently received an Individual Artists Programs grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for my debut solo exhibition, Eclosion: An Exploration of Ballroom.

For the better part of the past year, I’ve been traveling back and forth from NYC, becoming immersed in the legendary ballroom scene. I have followed nine dancers, in their homes, at practices, at balls, at classes, and with their chosen family.

Not only will this be my first solo exhibition, but my first time shooting a project entirely on 35mm film, as well as debuting a couple additional mediums I’ve been playing around with.

More soon, but for now, thank you to the amazing ballroom community for welcoming me with open arms. Thank you, @josesitolapaz, @thejasonarodriguez, @shontej_, @gioarcano, @ty_made_to_perform, @_joxury, @brandon_snow1216, @myspacemadss and @frutbattt for allowing me to capture you. Thank you to the members of the Haus of Telfar for taking me under their wings. Thank you to the House of Unbothered Cartier for allowing me into your house practices. Thank you to @chicagodcase for believing in this project and helping make it a reality.

And of course, thank you to the countless queer and trans Black and Brown folks that created the ballroom scene — a space of self expression, joy, protest, and safety. by @josesitolapaz
