A nugget of Colombian ancestral wisdom embellished by (Uruguayan sentipensador) Eduardo Galeano’s compelling poetry 🇨🇴🇺🇾📚. I see our indigenous people and our young defiant and change-thirsty generations represented in this quote. “The world … is a heap of people, a sea of tiny flames …. some foolish flames neither burn nor shed light, but others blaze with life so fiercely that you can’t look at them without blinking and if you approach, you shine in fire.” The Book of Embraces by @joseurreav

Beneath the New York skyline’s embrace, I take flight on wings of “Cucurrucucú Paloma” by Tomás Méndez 🕊️🇲🇽, weaving Mexican sonnets into the city’s soundscape. A melody that transcends language. A testament to the timeless beauty of Latinx culture. A humble homage to the cultural mosaic of NYC … it was an unforgettable night, marking my first live solo act in the city.”

Ph.D. 🎓🎶

A few fleeting moments from unforgettable graduation/defense days. One of the hardest and most meaningful journeys of my life. Grateful beyond words for everyone who became part of this chapter. by @joseurreav

“The world is blue at its edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost.”
— The Blue of Distance, Rebecca Solnit, from ‘A Field Guide for Getting Lost’

Marzo de 2026. Colorado, EE.UU.

This was March 2026. Colorado, USA.
Surrounded by family and mountains, I took this picture at the cusp of the final stretch of a six-year journey. Dissertation unfinished. Second draft. Approval pending. Defense ahead. Everything uncertain and everything possible…

I am on the other side now. And the blue is shifting. The mountains I was walking toward are now behind me, and somewhere ahead there is a new horizon already beginning, in the distance, to turn blue. Like the sky. Like the sea.

Con amor/ With love🌹🎶

………….

This is the beginning of my dissertation.
Please get comfortable.
Take a breath.
Connect to your body.
Let’s begin this journey—crossing each page as if we are crossing, together,
slowly but steadily,
a bridge into a new possible future.
With love,
Jose

——————————

We are living in a historical moment marked by unprecedented interconnection and, paradoxically, by a profound erosion of relational life (Way et al, 2018). The accelerating crises of the Anthropocene—climate instability, mass displacement, technological saturation, and, most recently, a global pandemic—have rendered visible not only the fragility of ecological systems, but also the vulnerability of the social, affective, and symbolic webs that sustain harmonious human existence (Braidotti, 2013,2022; Ruud, 2020). While contemporary societies are increasingly rich in objects, information, and technological mediation, they are, in many respects, growing poor in lived connection. Connection to one another, to the body, to the natural world, and to the deeper textures of meaning that arise through shared presence and participation(Rosa, 2019; Pavlicevic & Ansdell, 2010).

This crisis goes beyond the environmental and biomedical. It is also epistemic, relational, and cultural (Hadley, 2014; Castro-Gomez, 2021). It manifests in the fragmentation of experience, in the compartmentalization of knowledge, and in the progressive separation of feeling from thinking, of art from science, of body from mind, of human from more-than-human worlds (Braidotti, 2022). by @joseurreav

Six years in the making.

This reel is a glimpse into the final stretch of my doctoral journey at NYU. A dissertation (tentatively) titled Bridging the Divide: A Music Therapy-Informed Process for University Music Students to Promote Health and Wellbeing.

As a Colombian musician, music therapist, educator, artist, and researcher, I’ve been living inside the metaphor of “bridge”. I’ve been crossing between disciplines, identities, cultures, and ways of knowing.

This past year (and winter), while writing the first full draft, I kept crossing 🚴‍♂️ and filming 🎥 bridges across NYC. The research now lives beyond the page. It’s in my body. It’s in my becoming.

Qualitative. Arts-based. Action research.Almost the end of a long crossing.

🌉 Dissertation defense: Spring 2026 (fingers crossed)

Personal Note:
This show feels like a full-circle moment — The Bitter End was where I saw my very first live concert in NYC after beginning my PhD journey (four years ago, during pandemic times!). That night featured my dissertation director and mentor, @kenaigen, performing with the @stellabluesband, a Grateful Dead tribute group — and I’ll never forget it. I shared that moment with beloved friends, and it deeply inspired me. To now return to that same stage — behind the kit, with beautiful music and people I admire — is something truly special. Can’t wait to share it with you. 🎶❤️ by @joseurreav

(Español ⬇️) I’m so thrilled to be part of an incredible cast and team for Salomé, a powerful production as part of the @nyudramatherapy CRTC Project led by @dramaadam. Watch us bring Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece to life with acting, music, and dance under the direction of @jhoelsdramaticalchemy 🎭🎶 Performances from April 10-13. Free tickets (running fast!), but RSVP required—link in bio!

Note: I’m especially excited to be part of this project because it feels like an extension of my dissertation 📚, where I’m reflecting on the somewhat artificial divisions among creative roles and professions. As a music therapist, this experience is giving me a unique, hands-on opportunity to dive deeper into these themes, and it’s truly rewarding to see theory come to life on stage. 🎭

#Salomé #OscarWilde #NYU #DramaTherapy #TheatreMagic #RSVPNow #MusicTherapy

🎭 by @joseurreav
