"Europe April" as it’d come to be known. It didn’t really snow and it didn’t really matter. Every morning we were greeted by sunshine, a reaffirmation of my love for croissants, and as much ski touring as we could muster. I still don’t know French and I definitely haven’t figured out what a rest day is.

I skied what was likely my last full day at home last weekend. The recipe for a quintessential Eastside day was there. Car troubles, sage brush shuffling, a little spice, and bountiful skiing that kept us heading back up for another lap until the late afternoon. Smiles as wide as can be on the walk back. It felt so right, but it also felt a couple months too soon.

Thanks all for another season of skiing. I love it here even in these so-called bad years. I don’t think I really skied much of note. However, I had so many notable experiences with friends and family in this wonderful range. Whether we spent a full day out exploring or shared a couple of laps on the hill, it meant a lot to me. I hope we’ll do it again next season. by @josh.chartier

Backcountry skiing has been such a large part of my life these past few years. Getting to share it with my dad was really special. He’s followed along from a distance, ever so curious.

With spring in the air, I figured we might as well go into the alpine and to one of my favorite drainages. Our tour plan was a bit of a stretch for any new ski tourer, but fueled with burritos and gratitude we made it up just fine.

The flow of locomotion.

I can’t say that I’ve checked the forecast much or bothered with a detailed itinerary in some time.

I can say that I’ve gone backcountry skiing nearly everyday over the past month or so.

And, gee, well it’s been glorious.

Cajon del Maipo was something of an impetus to start our journey with backcountry skiing when @peakabui and I last visited Chile in 2017. Having never ripped skins or understood much about avalanches, we were in over our heads. We opted for chairlifts instead, but the Cajon has been on our radar ever since.

Upon our return this summer we decided to spend our entire time posted up in Banos Morales. The presentness we found in the big mountains followed us back to our remote shelter. There, everyday life was powered by the sun, the walls lined with relics of a storied past. This was mountain living.

With a week left in May, @peakabui and I packed up the car and drove north. In volcano country, the rhythm was simple. You have nowhere to go but up. At the top, we saw our past and future selves on the horizon. The present lay below. Ski and repeat.

We soon found ourselves idling in the fog outside Paradise Inn. Rainier’s quiet silhouette loomed against the midnight sky. With first light, the mountain came into view. So did the many goals we’d carried. Mending injuries, retracing family stories, progressing our skiing just a bit more.

The mountain held a lot for us that day.

“It’s like riding a bike.”

It has been just over a year since @peakabui and I visited the High Sierra, just the two of us, on skis. A place where magic awaits around every corner and smiles shine as bright as the sun.

8 consecutive weeks of skiing in the alpine at least once a week. With an early season dominated by injuries, the fire burns brightly this spring. My days have often started by ebike under the cover of darkness in search of the snowy delights that the High Sierra provides. A search or compulsion, it's hard to say.

Perhaps Doug Robinson said it best some 50 years ago. "What can I say about the Sierra Nevada, where I have lived the clearest hours of my life for as long as I can remember? That it laid hold of my senses and compelled me years ago to live at its feet, and that in order to be commanded by a fuller expression of Sierra wildness I find myself on this late day of March 1970 pulling north on skis across the Kern Plateau." taken in High Sierra by @josh.chartier

A dream realized. An intersection of several uncontrollable circumstances and a cultivation of a mindset over the years led to this day. My cup overflows with gratitude time and time again for the opportunity to travel these powder slopes high above the desert in the Eastern Sierra.
