😲 LONDON HAS A VICTORIAN TUNNEL THAT TAKES YOU UNDER THE THAMES AND IT’S BEEN THERE SINCE 1902! 🇬🇧

Imagine walking beneath one of Britain’s busiest rivers, with boats passing overhead and the Thames flowing above your head.

Now imagine doing it more than 120 years ago!

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel opened on 4th August 1902, connecting Greenwich on the south bank of the Thames with the Isle of Dogs on the north.

But why build a tunnel beneath the river in the first place?

Thousands of working people needed to cross the Thames to reach the docks and shipyards.

The existing ferry service could be unreliable, so the London County Council backed an ambitious engineering project that would provide a dependable crossing.

Designed by engineer Sir Alexander Binnie, construction began in 1899.

Workers excavated beneath the river using specialist tunnelling techniques, creating a passage approximately 370 metres long.

And here’s one of the most remarkable details… the tunnel was lined with around 200,000 white glazed tiles!

At either end, elegant circular entrance buildings with glass-domed roofs conceal spiral staircases and lifts that take pedestrians down to river level.

The tunnel even has a wartime story.

Its northern end suffered bomb damage during the Second World War, and the damaged section was strengthened with additional concrete and steel.

Today, you can still walk through this extraordinary piece of Victorian engineering for free, emerging near Island Gardens on the opposite side of the river.

And if you look back towards Greenwich from Island Gardens, you’ll find the famous view of the Old Royal Naval College and the Queen’s House.

Would you be brave enough to walk beneath the Thames knowing the river was flowing directly above you?
