Ahmet lives high in a valley of the Kaçkar Mountains during the summer months on his own, tending a small herd of cattle here and in the next valley over, moving between them on foot with his dog.

It’s easy to spot the difference between those who visit these mountains and those who belong to them. For Ahmet, moving through this valley was his way of life.

He went out of his way to hike up the pass with us when we rode up the valley he lives only to make us tea and muhlama. A genuinely and kind human. Grateful for this encounter with Ahmet. by @josh__conroy

In August of 2025, @joeyschusler, @its_jimmy_, and @josh__conroy spent eight days riding 261 miles through Turkey’s Kaçkar Mountains on a route they had made via satellite imagery. Climbing from the Black Sea into the heart of the range, they linked remote yaylas, glacial basins, and long ridgelines across one of the most amazing mountain ranges in Turkey.
