i'm here as a fellow human to acknowledge that josh has, as we know, graduated. josh was a man. also, josh was a student at fordham for 4 years. and when a man graduates, it is sad. all of us will graduate one day. in this case, it is josh who has done so. taken in Fordham University by @josh_steckler

to play moritz stiefel often requires one to surround themselves in darkness. the material is not comfortable and the track’s end can be mentally taxing. there may be fun rock songs to sing, but ultimately, the actor must deal with the story’s tragic conclusion.

the past six weeks have forced me, as an actor, to explore new territory. i am used to playing the comedic relief. moritz is the opposite. there is nothing funny about a teenager abused by the system meant to support him. it was new and frightening. throughout the rehearsal period, i was often kept awake late at night, much like moritz, by the story’s content. the music would haunt my dreams and some nights, i could barely sleep an hour before being woken by my fears. i did not want and could not dare to disrespect moritz’ story.

my success on this front is not for me to speak on, as i am inherently self-critical, but what i can say is that i am proud of what our director, our crew, our cast, and myself have created. covid-19 has practically dismantled the theatre industry, yet as a company, we came together and made a production that proved the power of performance has not and will not dissipate. it may not be perfect, but neither is live theatre. i am looking forward to rewatching in the future and reminiscing on the fact that we kept theatre alive in a time of crisis.

now, before this curtain closes, there are a select few i would like to address.

to teachers, care for your students. let them know that their thoughts are important and necessary.

to parents, love your children, enjoy your saturdays, and look forward to the grown-up places you’ll spend with them

to my friends, thank you for standing behind me when the road ahead looked so terrifying. i am not sure i could have dove as deep as i did without your support.

and finally, to moritz, thank you for letting me tell your story. you have taught me so much and still i long for so much more. i hope our paths cross again someday. maybe we’ll have an audience next time.

because you deserve a standing ovation.

i will sing the song of purple summer.

i promise. by @josh_steckler
