Last night the most loving, kind, and beautiful man that I’ve ever met in my (almost 40) years of this life asked me to marry him. Knowing the number 22 a significant number to me, Josh knew last night was the perfect time. It was the 122nd ECAD, Josh’s 22nd year as a Fellow member, and 4/18 (you do the math 😉). So, surrounded by friends & fellow explorers, holding votive candles in a circle of love, and under the twinkling lights of NYC @joshbernstein got down on one knee and proposed! Tomorrow marks one year of this beautiful, adventurous love we share, and I look forward to sharing the rest of our years side by side! taken in The Explorers Club by @joshbernstein

“Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love... Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and understanding. The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy, instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr

Into The Unknown: The Search For Life

The locations one gets to visit and explore to make a series are life changing. The expert one gets to interview are an honor to meet and engage with. But after all the miles and years on the road, it's the people on one's crew that end up meaning the most. This is just one of the teams I was fortunate to work with for Into The Unknown. We shot this group photo in Utah on the Salt Flats. It was the last episode of a long 19-month season of filming Into The Unknown. The camaraderie of the production team is the heart and soul of documentary series, and the relationships I have with my colleagues (past, present, and-- I hope--future) is what keeps me coming back for more and more adventures and insights.

Extremophiles are microorganisms that live in places scientists didn't think anything could be alive. Some are also re-defining our understanding of what life is. Here, I've hiked miles underground (and put on a protective suit) to look at extremophiles found in the Snowy River cave.

For millennia people have assumed that because we live on Earth, life must have started here. But scientists are now seriously considering that life may have come here from Mars, having navigated the hazards of deep space to take up residence on Earth. On this episode of Into The Unknown, I gained access to places only NASA scientists are typically allowed on my quest through the American West for the true story.

Into The Unknown: Living with Mummies
•
(Post 3 of 3)
•
Another great part of this experience (there were many) was getting to hang out with mummy expert Dr. Ron Beckett of the Bioanthropology Research Institute at Quinnipiac University. We brought Ron in to assess the health of the Anga's sacred mummies and help reduce the degrading effects of time and weather. Rather than bring modern conservation materials with him, though, Ron decided to use local materials from the jungle, so he could then teach the villagers how to preserve the mummies once we left. Absolutely brilliant. Plus it was great fun to experiment and figure out what techniques, materials, and plants worked and what didn't.

Into The Unknown: Living with Mummies

If you're curious how I ended up sitting across from that village chief, it's thanks to this woman here -- German photojournalist, climber, and world traveler Ulla Lohmann. Ulla had been living with and photographing the Anga people on and off for years. When Chief Gemtasu asked her if she knew anyone who could help share his knowledge of mummification with the world through a documentary, she said "actually, I saw this guy on TV who might be perfect for that."
•
Note: Full disclosure, I don't know if Ulla said that at all. I just know that she reached out to the Discovery Channel and Discovery called me saying, in one of the best messages ever "There's a village chief in Papua New Guinea who wants you to come and help document a sacred mummification ritual." So let's just go with this version of the story, shall we?

Into The Unknown: The Search for Noah’s Ark
•
(Post 3 of 3)

If you've seen the show, you might recall this most unusual hole in the ground. It's a Stone Age well located under what today is a resort in Paphos, Cyprus. Archaeozoologist Dr. Paul Croft and I rappelled into the well to look at neolithic bones that shed light on what animals were here 12,000 years ago and how they might have gotten to this island (hint: it might have been by ark).

Into The Unknown: The Search for Noah’s Ark

See that gold and silver case behind the glass? See the wood inside that gold and silver case? According to Father Ktrij Devejian, an American-Armenian priest at the Holy Cathedral of Etchmiadzin in Armenia, that's a piece of Noah's Ark. In one of the more enjoyable interviews I've had over the years, Father Ktrij and I had an honest discussion about whether or not this could really be from the ark and what role faith plays in that determination.

Into The Unknown: The Search for Noah’s Ark

For thousands of years, the story of Noah’s Ark and the great flood has been passed down the generations. But did the flood of Genesis really happen? On this episode of Into The Unknown, I investigated a compelling new theory about the truth behind this extraordinary story, traveling from Israel to Armenia to Italy on the hunt for clues, finally ending at an archaeological site in Cyprus with some pretty interesting information.
•
That sloping peak in the background? That's Mount Etna, a volcano in Sicily that erupted so violently 8.000 years ago that it may have caused a tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea. Perhaps memories of this "flood" are connected to stories of Noah and his ark?
