From Sand Dollars to AI Glasses: Meta’s Joshua To on Designing the Future of Wearables

Joshua To’s journey to becoming Meta’s VP, Product Design for wearables began in a bedroom that doubled as a furrier’s showroom. Growing up in a San Francisco immigrant household, he was surrounded by makers, from his grandfather who hand-retouched black-and-white photos to parents who spent their days tailoring fur coats. This early immersion in creative problem-solving fueled an entrepreneurial spirit that saw him selling T-shirts in middle school and running an international clothing brand by college.

But his path to the top of the tech world was anything but linear. He broke into Google not as a designer, but as a contractor proofreading text ads, eventually proving his value by designing improvements to the literal spacing on the Google search homepage. After leaving to launch his own consultancy and venture fund, he returned to Google, and then moved to Meta to lead the teams behind some of the most ambitious hardware on the planet.

Today, he is at the center of Meta’s evolution from social software to agentic hardware, supporting the team on breakout successes like Meta Ray-Ban AI glasses from his role in the new Meta Design Studio. In this conversation, To shares how he balances the “move-fast” DNA of Meta with the hard reality of physical products, and why he views his role not as a traditional executive, but as an orchestra conductor for the world’s best design talent and partners.

Just before Us By Night 2026, we launched Through Their Eyes 👓 A new experiment created with @meta smart-glasses gathering behind-the-scenes moments from our speakers, DJs and visitors.

Here’s @laurainka. Head to our site for plenty more! 🎬

The platform keeps growing beyond the festival. We don’t know where it will lead yet, but we’re loving what’s coming in: raw, spontaneous and unpolished footage captured from each participant’s own perspective. Across the project, participants used @raybanmeta , @oakleymeta and @metaglasses

Our dear friend David Wilson (@hidavidwilson) gave us one of the most epic closing-night keynotes / cabaret shows in Us By Night history back in 2024. ❤️

This year, he was coming back simply as a visitor, partly to see one of his idols, Gary Card (@garycard), and partly to share some of his beautiful handmade animations with us.

Then we had a last-minute cancellation.

So… we asked David if he’d be up for doing a talk again. With basically no preparation time. 😬

But if you know David, you know he never shies away from a challenge. Of course he said yes.

David is also part of our Meta Smart Glasses project, sharing little pieces of his world for our Through Their Eyes page on our website. And this morning, he sent us this movie.

Too much love for this dude.❤️❤️❤️

Good product design can change how we relate to technology before we even use it.

Noware (@noware.nyc), co-founded by Harry Isaac (@harry.isaac) and Sebastian Bidegain (@voidfillstudio), explores that idea through PUFF, a USB flash drive redesigned as a personal object with multiple use cases. The team rethinks the familiar form factor through its metal construction, interchangeable elements, and hidden OLED display, giving the device a more expressive product language and tactile quality. Those decisions expand how the flash drive can be carried, worn, and interacted with, turning its physical form into an important part of the experience.

What I appreciate about Noware’s approach is how they look at familiar technology as an opportunity to rethink the experience around it. Their work shows how a strong product language can preserve utility while giving everyday technology a more personal, expressive, and human presence. by @joshto

This is where we build Us By Night. From scratch.

I wanted to show you the completely empty warehouse before we start building. Turns out there was an electric go-kart event happening inside. 😅 They couldn’t turn on the lights, so… obviously I asked if I could borrow a kart.

Welcome to the future Us By Night Nightmarket.

In just over two weeks, this empty concrete warehouse will become a completely different world: Stadium Stage, Teatro stage, XYZ club, @craigflemingphoto Portrait Studio, live printing, a 70m wheatpasting wall, tattoos @braboshandtattoo , massage, screenings, digital graffiti @rebel9_ , arcade games, ping pong, food, installations, DJs and a whole lot more.

And what you see here is only half of the venue.

The Teatro Stage sits in another huge hall behind this one. This year we’re completely reimagining it, with a scaffolding balcony wrapping around the entire hall, created in collaboration with @antwerpposterfestival and doubling as their exhibition space between the talks.

That’s maybe one of our favourite things about Us By Night. We don’t move into a festival venue. We build the whole damn thing.

From nothing.

Two weeks to go. 😅

24–25–26 September, Antwerp.

Meet Joyce Hsu (@naabeebe), Hardware System Integration Lead at Meta whose background started in Fine Arts and Architecture. She taught herself hardware over the last 11 years that showcased best with Joycebots, figures that turns people into highly recognizable characters through abstraction and a surprisingly small set of visual cues.

She takes a “less is more” approach, using abstraction, proportion, silhouette, and articulation to showcases what makes me recognizable. The glasses, simplified features, wardrobe, and restrained palette are all there, but nothing feels overworked. She found the details that carry the most visual weight and gave them just enough definition to create a clear form language. I noticed the same traits in Alfred Jones (@b1tech), where she uses a completely different visual language to bring his character to life.

It’s pretty awesome getting to work alongside talented people like Joyce every day and seeing how they bring their own perspective to something as familiar as identity. by @joshto
