“This film began from a personal relationship with water. Growing up Christian, I associated water with baptism, cleansing, and renewal. My family also ran a water refilling station. Early on, I understood water as something that cleanses the body of toxins. Over time, this idea expanded beyond the physical, becoming emotional and psychological.”

#NOWNESSASIAPicks NEW: Tokyo-based filmmakers Joshua Noel and Nobu Arakawa direct ‘And So I Dance Again,’ a dance film depicting an immersive, somatic ritual of cleansing and release.

Contemporary dancer Soutaro Ito embodies this ritual with a performance rooted in somatic awareness and butoh-influenced physicality. His body is initially weighed down by mud, carrying an accumulation of trauma. Through slow, internalised movement, he enters the lake. Water is both witness and receiver, personified by a gentle voiceover which listens, almost like a divine force.
