joshchowza. issue 01

Hello everyone!!! I don’t usually post things promoting myself at all but I’ve been working on something that I’ve been mustering up the courage to share with the world… for those who aren’t familiar with joshchowza — I started joshchowza in 2020 during the pandemic. And like so many of us may have felt, being in the kitchen and cooking a meal at the end of the day felt like a familiar constant in a world where so many things felt uncertain (and still do.) What started out as a way for me to share the things I was making and enjoy a short respite from reality has grown into a way for me to nourish myself and my community, so that we can share our joy and sorrows with one another and remind ourselves that no matter how lonely we may feel, there’s always someone out there thinking of us.

In this 36 page zine, I’ve included some of my favorite recipes through the recent years, shared memories and experiences at restaurants, and talked about some of the events I’ve hosted and dinners I’ve cooked.

Making this zine was a true labor of love — love that I find no shortage of in the wonderful and kind people in my life. joshchowza has always been about home and the people that make it unshakably so, so it’s fitting that this project could only have happened with the assistance of so many other people. Thank you to @samanthasujo and @gentleworms for design and printing help and all the friends who encourage me to do things that scare me! The older I get the less certain I am about anything, but I know that whats on my plate will always taste better at a table with my friends and family.

All this to say, I’ll be making this into a physical zine that I’ll be printing out and I’m opening pre-orders for $20 each so DM me if you’d like to purchase one! I’m aiming to get these printed out and shipped around April-May :3

All profits made from this zine will be donated to @thamra_org , a Palestinian organization committed to fostering food sovereignty by addressing food insecurity and revitalizing agricultural traditions in Gaza. You can read more about the work Thamra is doing at thamra.org

and if you sit underneath the direct sun tying knots for hours, you might get sunburnt

and if you drive 3 hours up the coast of california, you might get to see two of the kindest, most uplifting friends you know begin a lifelong journey of choosing one another!!! above all else!!!!!
