“Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn’t Stop To Think If They Should .” Dr. Ian Malcolm (talking about AI, probably) 😜

I fully understand we are in an AI arms race - frontier labs like Google, xAI, META and OpenAI wouldn’t be asking for 10 years of amnesty from the federal government if we weren’t.

And while I also fully understand that China is a near existential threat relative to challenging the United States and our place as the global hegemon and superpower, the pace at which AI is overtaking industry and life in general is nothing short of breathtaking.

Military uses are seemingly always the endgame relative to this type of innovation - and that’s frightening enough. But commercial uses that are flooding the lives of young children - is anybody actually stopping to think what we might be ‘losing’ as a society?

When smartphones were introduced, ‘nobody’ was ready for it - our parents and grandparents’ generations had never had to navigate such a massive leap forward in personal technology availability, and look where we are today ~ 20 years later - phone addiction is destroying families. We have a loneliness epidemic, a mental health crisis for teens, and now that AI is being baked into ‘everything’ nobody seems to be willing to pause and ‘really’ try to consider the potential ramifications.

We are not luddites at @1000hoursoutside - and we do not claim to have all the answers - but we do have concerns as parents and citizens, about the non-regulated, wild-west and amnesty-seeking AI companies.

The fact that Mark Zuckerberg is offering $100mm signing bonuses (and more) should be a MAJOR concern for people. by @joshyurich

It’s simple. When you’re heading toward something, you’re inevitably leaving something else behind.

Sadly, many parents just flat out make excuses for not leading their kids when it comes to time outside, and hence time away from technology.

It’s hard. I get it. We have 5 kids - we aren’t anti-technology but we ‘are’ very pro ‘let’s fill our days with hands-on experiences and leave any leftover time for screens.’

And as @1000hoursoutside always says, our very BEST days are the days when we simply run out of time for tech 🤷‍♂️

Artificial Intelligence is here in a big way, in case you haven’t noticed. We talk about it often in our home, on the podcast and in my own professional circles. It’s permeating every industry, every educational setting and every home. Like everything there are pros and cons to it, yet that’s a post for another day.

But one place we can escape all the noise - wars, rumors of wars, the pervasiveness of screens and the distraction economy that treats parents as ‘purchasing friction”, is the outdoors.

So parents - are you leading your kids toward adventure? Toward a life of hands-on learning and experiential living? Or are you throwing in the towel and allowing technology to raise your kids?

We are living in uncertain times and the world needs a generation of doers, not drones. I truly hope it’s the former and not the latter you are choosing. Time outside with your family will almost assuredly make it so. ❤️ by @joshyurich

Turtles clearly aren’t in a hurry - and as parents, we shouldn’t be in a hurry either to rush our kids’ learning process.
