Here, finally, is the VERY BIG NEWS.
There are two articles this week- one yesterday and one today - where I reveal what’s been happening 💚🌱 by @jothompsongarden

How to make your garden look good in October 🎃

If it’s grey where you are, and back in the winter, you amazingly and cleverly planned that your garden would NOT get you down this autumn, you might well still have some colour in your garden. Dahlias maybe? Asters? 💜

But if your garden is looking as relentlessly grey as those Tupperware skies outside, don’t be downhearted. The Gardening Mind is here to help: I have a list which will make sure your garden doesn’t get down in the dumps again.

Rose shopping list 🛒 🌹

My post this week over on The Gardening Mind features my wishlist of roses, organised by function, including for a wall or fence (even a shady one), scent and where you sit, a warm sheltered spot and roses for pots.

There’s much, much more to explore, including whether a garden designer can ever have regrets about their own garden (spoiler - they can), planting inspiration for your summer border and how to choose your rose.

Today I’m revealing some of my own garden horrors in never-seen-before photos. It’s all about the honesty in The Gardening Mind, and today is no exception 🌱💚

Plus - it’s bareroot rose planting time, and so there’s a checklist on how to avoid choosing the wrong rose, along with my rose shopping list.

Project focus: RHS Chatsworth - the Brewin Dolphin Garden, 2017 🌿

In the FreeForm category, we created this garden to celebrate the landscape of the 1,000-acre parkland and the elegance and beauty of Chatsworth House.

The garden made the most of the beautiful views and natural curves of the landscape and provided a spectacular contemporary viewpoint from which to enjoy ‘Capability’ Brown’s historic vistas. 🌅

Central to the design was an imposing contemporary sculpture crafted from reinforcing steel bars which swept through the space, taking in the shape of the river before cantilevering dramatically out over the water.

The garden won Best in Show and People’s Choice. 🏅

If you are looking to revitalise a space, or part of a space, or start from scratch, we are always open to and excited by the next project. We love working collaboratively on a design brief and will happily work on all sizes of projects - from public spaces to residential family gardens, to historic estates. If you can bank on squirrels in your garden, don’t bank on tulips there. 🌷

While I usually leave my bulb planting to a little later (November) the question of how to deter those pesky whirlwinds of fur is always there.

I’d love to hear your methods. My friend Jo Fairley swears by a layer of seaweed over pots, whilst I think a layer of chickenwire over any planting, with a thin layer of soil on top, does the trick.

Jo also firmly believes that squirrels can put two and two together very quickly and so are attracted by newly-disturbed ground, therefore if you add a layer of leaves and make the spot look all forest-floory, they’re more likely to leave it alone.

Over on The Gardening Mind I pick out lots of tulip suggestions and everyone shares their views on the best defence for squirrel. Subscribe to read and join us over on Substack.

Project focus: The Bell Inn, Sussex 🔔

A garden for a community, with a convivial fire pit at its heart. 🔥

The low-maintenance borders are woven through with ribbons of ornamental grasses, while spring bulbs and late-summer dahlias introduce seasonal colour to the permanent planting.

Four guest lodges, slightly sunken so as not to dominate the skyline, have roofs capped with tufts of grass and the odd banana plant. To introduce a sense of enclosure on what was essentially an exposed site, a palisade of weathered timber sleepers and seating was created to surround a central fire pit.

If you are looking to revitalise a space, or part of a space, or start from scratch, we are always open to and excited by the next project. We love working collaboratively on a design brief and will happily work on all sizes of projects - from public spaces to residential family gardens, to historic estates.
