that last penguin is too adorable 🥺

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #20 | Gentoo penguins up close.

On one of my last days in Antarctica, I explored around a colony of Gentoo penguins and got to sit and watch their behaviors. I was so excited to see any baby penguins, but it would be another few months before eggs began to hatch. But I could’ve sat there for hours just watching the penguins as they interacted with each other and built their nest.

Some penguins just sat there and squawked at each other, and others laid quietly on their nests, while others just waddled around seemingly with no care in the world.

It’s quite fun to witness this all up close :).

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #19 | Life through my lens.

To be honest, I never dreamed of coming to Antarctica. It was an opportunity that just kind of fell in my lap. Even in planning this trip for two years, I anticipated it and had no idea what to expect. The excitement grew as time went on, and eventually became a dream after saying yes to see this place for myself.

I had been to icy places, like Norway and Iceland, but nothing so remote and exotic as this. This place was every other icy place I had been to, but on a whole other level.

I wanted to experience this remote, frozen, wild place with fresh eyes and a clear mind. To fully be amazed by every little thing and feel it through my own experience. And I can report: this landscape and feeling of wonder is incomparable.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #18 | The sleepy penguin.

While filming in antarctica, a colony of penguins were scattered around the waters edge, and this one was off on his own. just slowly closing his eyes and taking in deep little breaths.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #17 | Charlotte Bay [64°34’ S, 61°37’ W]

On our route to Portal Point [64°30′S 61°46′W], we took the morning to sail around Charlotte Bay and look for wildlife. It was a bit snowy and foggy in the mountains, which made for a beautiful landscape. The icebergs today were different than I had seen before - I hadn’t seen that many flat icebergs in one place before. Each flat iceberg had about an inch or two of fresh, untouched snow on it. On some icebergs you could even see little penguin tracks where penguins had leaped up on the icebergs and hopped off at one point in time.

We even spotted a Weddell Seal laying on an iceberg, just admiring us. We stayed our distance, but with my lens I could zoom way in and see it tilting its head and looking around all curious. Their pattern on their skin is so unique. They’re kind of cute too with their little snout and big round eyes.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #16 | A few favorite snapshots.

These photos are ones that spark my excitement of icy landscapes. The blue and blue-ish off-white of the ice across the water, and the flat icebergs covered in a layer of fresh, untouched snow, truly is a wonder to me. I can almost feel the air and smell the snow when I look at these photos.

I loved to capture a bit of abstract photos while in this vast place, and can’t wait to hang these on a wall someday.

ON THE 7TH CONTINENT.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #15 | Hiking on the mainland of Antarctica.

I found it just so cool that I could hike on the mainland of Antarctica. To say I’ve set foot on the Antarctic continent, and not just the South Shetland Islands surrounding the penninsula, I felt that much closer to the explorers that pioneered the South Pole back I the early 1900’s.

Amundsen, Shackleton, and Scott, all at one point in time were some of the explorers to traverse the Drake Passage and fight to reach the South Pole. To be on the same land that they once were makes me feel all sorts of things. One of those things feeling so small, and increasingly impressed by the extreme exploration that those explorers really embarked on. This climate is extreme, and unforgiving, yet they went anyway. I’m starting to understand their sense of adventure here - this place is truly something special.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #14 | 64.8954° S, 62.8706° W at Base Brown

This is one of my favorite days, for several reasons.

I woke up, pulled open the curtains, and saw a flat white, snowy, ice crusted across the top of the water kind of day. Some people might be sad when they see an overcast day, but I was just the opposite - I immediately smiled big and felt like a hug to my heart, my favorite kind of day! The snow was falling gently, and the fog was just lifting to see the base on land and the peaks along it.

Base Brown is the first spot that we can to that is on the actual mainland of Antarctica, and not just on the South Shetland Islands. Today I would step foot on the actual mainland of Antarctica - woah - I was ecstatic!

I could faintly see people already exploring around the base, and they looked so tiny compared to the massive cliffs of the towering mountains above. All the base buildings are red, which adds a picturesque feature to the white background.

minke whales came over to say hi 🥺

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #13 | Seeing my first Minke Whale!

I was completely shocked and amazed that I was seeing a whale this close in my lifetime!

As the story goes, we were coming back to the ship after adventuring around the bay covered in icebergs, we saw Minke whales in the distance and decided to ease our way quietly over near where we last saw them.

When we approached that area, we turned off the engine of the boat and waited. And waited. And then, behind us we heard a whale blow out of the water and we saw a fin come up. Then another whale, and another. Closer and closer they came, until we couldn’t believe what was happening. The pod of Minke whales stayed around our zodiak boat and swam around and under us for almost 10 minutes, all curious about us. I was internally frekaing out with excitement because I had NEVER been this close to a whale before or had seem them like this in my entire life.

Probably the coolest thing that had yet happened to me was captured in this very video 🥹

day in the life of a penguin.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #12 | Penguins and icebergs in Antarctica.

I never realized how fast penguins were until they began zooming around the water beneath our zodiak and jumping onto surrounding icebergs as they floated by. They’re honestly so cute and our squeals of joy definitely show how happy we were.

I also found out that penguins can hold air bubbles between their feathers and them squeeze the air out to launch themselves wherever they want to go. Whether they’re jumping onto icebergs, swimming through the water, or escaping prey, they’re actually a pretty speedy animal.

| JOURNAL OF ANTARCTICA | ENTRY #11 | The blue of Antarctica.

I’ve simply never seen a blue like the blue that lives in Antarctica. I know it was cold and snow covered here, but I wasn’t prepared for how amazed I’d be by one simple color. A color I’ve always loved, yet never knew all these shades existed of it. So now, I love blue even more - especially ‘antarctic blue’. 🩵
