Making things fit together, requires more than a pretty render. For brands focused on how a product looks, it is about making sure the design stays true - balanced & timeless, while being designed for production; in the correct metals or materials. For tech companies, it makes sure the engineering is guided to integrate in a way that enhances aesthetics, complimenting the design language of the brand.

The most powerful tool in product development isn’t software…. This is the technique for dev managers + entreprenuers.

If you really want to push your team, get them aligned & pull them off the computer.

What is the real pain point for most design teams, is that a single idea discussed in a meeting turns into two or three people spending days in CAD trying to visualise it, each coming back with a slightly different interpretation. This is one of the biggest hurdles to fast development cycles.

.. & the best way to really save your business money- which is key right now not just because of the economy, but also due to global supply & logistics pressures, is to improve efficiency & communication. When your team can communicate better & faster, it saves incredible time across the project, & improves your team’s overall success by a huge factor.

Get them sketching & visualizing their ideas before jumping into CAD. Even if some struggle with it at first or aren’t confident sketchers, you’ll notice huge improvements within six months if you make this a core part of your design process.

Here’s what you’ll see:
	•	Faster development cycles
	•	Clearer communication across the team
	•	More viable concepts
	•	Shorter time to testing
	•	Less expensive prototypes
	•	Fewer CAD mistakes & unnecessary revisions

Sketching allows your team to align correctly with what actually needs to be built before ever opening the software, as well as what should be paused.

A sketch like this might take 15 to 20 minutes for one designer, or a couple of hours for another but it will save days of work.

This drawing was used to communicate second-phase improvements to a product in market & helped the key stakeholder decide instantly which method was suitable, based on their knowledge of the instal teams in field.

If you have similar experiences please share.

Instilling design philosophy with FTN Motion . 📽️ Watch Luke’s thoughts on this journey, along with a few of our sketches & CAD for the early direction.

Through concept work and discussions, we explored how aesthetic & function could reinforce a new approach to electric motorcycles.

From sketching forms to CAD modelling, concepts shape the future.

We strategized the design DNA & language of the Streetdog with FTN long ago. They’ve now hand built for hundreds of customers in NZ & shortly launch to Australia.

Once we produced concept sketch designs of the form language with FTN, back & forth iteration happened & we built 3D CAD concept models for them to develop a working prototype from.

After building their first working prototype of the Streetdog we were commissioned again to rebuild the 3D CAD model of the frame & form to refine aesthetically & also to be suitable for adjusting the design of as incremental engineering iterations took place.

The goal was simple - “Do something good for the world.” That vision shaped everything that came next.

Luke and Kendall refined their experimental innovation & used the concept design we worked on with them to produce their working prototype, which was fully 3D printed. Then we worked on form development in 3D CAD modelling.

Before FTN was a thing, before anyone had seen their bike, we worked with Luke & team on what would become their defining design language.

The design DNA & language were strategised long before any sketches—through design thinking & strategy.

This process involved deep conversations, understanding user needs, the market, and the industry to clarify a vision before putting pen to paper. Proportion, form, and usability were key factors in shaping the overall strategy. Only once this foundation was set did the first sketches emerge, leading into concept CAD models.

From there, Luke and Kendall refined their experimental innovation & used the concept & strategy we worked on with them to produce their working prototype, which was fully 3D printed.

Notice the beveled lid - clearance geometry down to the millimeter makes this product work. 2mm up, down, forwards or aft would remove practicality of the singular part hinge assembly.

This is the 4th generation Eco Hinge, made with flexibility to iterate as installations take place for product improvement.

Developed through close & continuous collaboration with the client.

This product system, intended never to be seen - or for as little as possible…

We have been very proud to contribute to this Eco friendly vision of PSH & help build a system for them to operate confidently with for high demanding outdoor chlorinated environments.

We’ve worked alongside Justin & the team at @poolsolarheatingspecialist to develop a robust metal system for making a large lid, look as if it were not a lid when closed.

On going development, prototype testing, field testing led to a deducting of material close to 90% when compared to competitor products.
