The subject is María Ana de Pontejos y Sandoval, the Marquesa de Pontejos, painted shortly after her wedding at the age of twenty-four.
Her attire is in the "shepherdess" style popularized by Queen Marie Antoinette of France, featuring a broad-brimmed straw hat and a wasp-waisted corset.
She holds a pink carnation, often an emblem of love shown with brides, and roses are tucked into her gown, suggesting the portrait was likely for her first marriage.
The painting also features a pug dog at her feet.
