DID YOU KNOW? — CHRONOMÈTRE OPTIMUM One of the coolest details of the F.P. Journe Chronomètre Optimum is hidden on the back. The large deadbeat seconds hand actually travels counter-clockwise. Why? The deadbeat seconds is produced naturally by the Optimum’s one-second remontoir d’égalité, which stores and releases energy once every second. Reversing the direction of the seconds hand would have required Journe to add additional components. So he didn’t. Fewer parts meant less friction, less complexity and fewer potential points of failure — completely consistent with the purpose of the Optimum: achieving the best possible chronometric performance. Even more interesting, Journe says he originally designed the Chronomètre Optimum in 2001, although the watch would not be internationally launched until 2012. Sometimes the strange little details tell you the most about the watchmaker. IN­VENIT ET FECIT INVENIT ET FECIT. Three words that explain much of what makes F.P. Journe different. Latin for “Invented and Made,” the phrase reflects François-Paul Journe’s philosophy that a watchmaker should not simply decorate or assemble a movement—the watch should originate from the watchmaker himself. The name appeared on the F.P. Journe wristwatch collection introduced in 1999 and continues to sit quietly on the dial today. For collectors, it may be one of the smallest details on a Journe.
