maggie’s work to me has always brought me into worlds of intimacy and tenderness. Each piece translating into a physical gesture interacting with the human body. Holding, treasuring, displaying. It’s been an absolute pleasure collaborating on her latest site.

It’s been five months since my fellowship at the Times has ended! Being able to have worked in this amazing team for almost a year has been a dream come true. Editorial became more than just a field of profession, but a practice to design with intention and care for any audience or project. Maybe one of the biggest takeaway…now everything on my personal website is vertically cropped on a mobile view, thanks DND!

Could not have designed, coded, or pushed through any of these work without these legends @iamrumz @chillanico @alizauf @umieats @alice_cian @_catangui @rslieber @rurukuooo @edenweingart.jpg @talasafie @gianordoli @leohdear @michaelbeswetherick @tonydeluxxx Matt, Andrew, and the many many more 🔗 by @joyceho.x

when movies don’t pay me to do their posters, i design them myself. When i really like the film, i dream of hosting movie nights with it paired to a specific drink. Here’s some, more to come…!

1 The Fall by Tarsem Singh
2 Ratatouille Pixar
3 Suzhou River by Lou Ye
4 Nocturnal Animals by Tom Ford
5 Playtime by Jacques Tati

enjoyed lettering some of these but using Styro from ITF for Playtime and Bild from DJR w some customization for The Fall. Posting these in the week for #TheNiceGalleryFilm #itsnicethat #movie #movieposter by @joyceho.x

4 months ago, I ended my 4 years at RISD with this final degree project titled CURRENTLY ON VIEW. Graphic design has always been, more or less, a way of storytelling for me. With it comes an issue of interest, “I’ll never be able to tell the full story.” Neither did the evolution of technology fully help with our time’s critical imagination in being curious of the fully story—things are hyper-legible, frying attention spans.

In the attempt to open up this conversation, my project tells the same story 5 times, in 5 books. It is disguised under one of my all time favorites, Ted Chiang’s fictional story “Tower of Babylon.” Written in a third person pov, Hillalum goes up the biblical tower only to realize that it will always brings him back to ground level—revealing a world almost like a möbius strip without heaven being ever reachable. In analogy to Hillalum’s journey, it is drawn in analogy to the designer’s journey to present a perfect design—our version of heaven.

Across 5 books, you’ll find only the 3rd book reproducing Chiang’s original story word by word in a stereotypical novel format whereas the two ends of the axis either expands the material with fabricated pieces of evidence in Hillalum’s journey or compresses the book to the experience of scanning the story. By the fifth book, the intervention of technology asks you to filter out information through noise. To present perfection in way that makes you question it. In other words, information was never lost in any of the books but simply unveiled through a form of critical imagination, in James Goggin’s words from our interview, “generous ambiguity.”

For more information and list of people who made this project possible please visit https://joyceho.com/Thesis

All the appreciation goes to my advisor @anastasiia.raina with the most generous help from @practisetheory , @lauracoombs , Professor Kenneth Berger, @leahbeeferman ,
@jeennyyu , @tiger.dingsun + so so many more.

Looking back at my time in college, thank you Robert Canfield for teaching me how to think, @elizabeth_goodspeed for bringing light to graphic design, @regretsonly.llc @vanitymetrics for bringing so much joy into an internship. taken in Rhode Island School of Design by @joyceho.x

I grew up in a space where death was silenced and avoided in conversations. How do we live with death? CYBORG WEAR is an embodiment of marks left on my skin and identity after being in conversation with 4 individuals who shared a pivotal moment relating to the subject matter——A person’s perception of death can condition their way of experiencing life. The conversations go from military dictatorship, genetics, diseases, families, to something as mundane as work life balance. This is a print+digital reading experience with the printed conversation wrapped around mylar UV printed with my scanned skin texture. Each zine features a body tag of myself after being in conversation with each of the individuals where the reader can scan and be redirected to a site hosting all the illustrated marks on my skin. As the reader flips through the text they may find snippets of the illustration that will become keys to navigating on the web interface—clicking on these key graphics will transfer you to other sources of information available on the web relating to the conversation.

The digital interface is currently mobile device only (desktop with full conversation transcript in development). More information to the project is available on my site

This has been a deeply connecting project and would not have been possible without Robert Canfield, Shiraz Gallab, Mariela Yeregui, and Emma T. Capps——the 4 people I’ve centered this project around. I want to give an additional thank you to writer and poet Jeremy Fernando allowing me to use his poem from Writing Skins (2009) as the opening line printed on the back cover.

starting last year I helped Miguel rebrand his own chocolate line based in Rhode Island 🦥 Took on some brand strategy and writing around seeing chocolate as quality time. With boxes of different assortments, each packaging strike a specific number on the clock - implying a specific moment to share with parties of 1, 4, 8, or 12. ~website coming soon~

customized logotype w text set in Nudista and Director Regular by Ange Degheest, Justine Herbel, May Jolivet from Velvetyne
