Fresh and flavorful pasta sauce:
Sauté chopped garlic in olive oil.
Blend 3 heirloom tomatoes until smooth.
Add tomatoes, a splash of wine, basil bouquet, and half a carrot.
Season with salt + pepper, simmer 10–15 min.
Remove carrot and basil before serving.
That’s it. Simple and delicious.

I had a serious craving for roast leg of lamb, so I gave in, and it was so worth it! I loosely followed my instincts and drew inspiration from two of my favorites, @ottolenghi and @alicelouisewaters. The result: slow-roasted lamb nestled over a bed of golden and red baby potatoes, sweet fennel, garlic, and herbs. I added dried cherries and apricots for a little pop of sweetness, and it brought everything to life.

Something unexpected has happened since I entered the @favchef competition—I’ve been reflecting on all the memories I have involving food and cooking.

I think most of us can say that what we’ve learned about cooking has come from our relatives and that some of our most vivid memories revolve around food. Last week, while making dinner, I thought about my grandmothers as I prepared beans and rice. I learned by watching them. I also made salsa, and at the forefront of my mind was my dad, who passed away in 2017. It was his recipe, one I don’t think I will ever truly master—he was the king of fresh salsa.

My dad was the kind of person who was just as excited about the food you could make with a backyard loquat tree as he was about an extravagant sushi dinner.

None of these memories would have resurfaced if it weren’t for this contest. In a way, it feels like I’m spending time with my dad again. Food was such an integral part of my family life growing up in L.A., and I could go on and on.

Here’s to food memories! Please share yours in the comments or a post!

📸 3: Beans and rice may seem unpretentious, but in my opinion, they’re deceptively difficult to make well. They require a high level of kitchen acumen.

Who of my fellow L.A. locals remembers the Juice Fountain in Hollywood? I learned how to make this banana, date, peanut butter, milk smoothie from them. I sometimes add coffee for a work day boost. More important than the recipe, is the fact that it was a wildly successful, small business, owned by a Latin American woman. The smoothies reminded me of the liquados that my maternal grandmother used to make 💜 by @joyfulnurturing

I used to have a very good kitchen helper, but alas, she became a teenager, resigned and has now been replaced. @valentina.granovsky, it's never too late to restart your cooking journey! My new helpers only clean floors. by @joyfulnurturing

The lemon tree that keeps on giving. I've spent years trying to perfect a pasta al limone that I grew up eating at legendary, L.A., Italian restaurant Orlando Orsini. Thanks to the generosity of this tree, I'm getting closer each time. by @joyfulnurturing
