The JJI team would like to take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the Broadway firsts made by Black artists in the past year.

While we acknowledge this living history, we eagerly await a day when Black artists are lauded for the quality of their artistry first and foremost. It is our hope that these are steps towards a more inclusive, accessible, and representative theatre community on Broadway and beyond.

As Black History Month continues, we continue to look back to our “why.”

Our aim is to set a new industry standard for the American Theater and other arts organizations wherein BIPOC artists, administrators, and audiences are truly valued, safe, and uplifted.

This industry could not exist without the Black lives that created and continue to enrich it, and as we reflect on that, it is more clear than ever that our work cannot stop until artistic spaces begin contributing to the enrichment of Black lives and artistry.

As we look to celebrate Black History this month, and every day of the year, we’re reminded of this quote from Lynn Streeter Childress (@mamalynnec)

As JJI reflects on Broadway's reopening, we look back at notable moments that have occurred through our living-history. In the next few months, we plan to look deeper into important events and begin a dialogue on industry protocols, precautions, and practices with our broader community. As we begin this larger conversation, we ask you: what is a change you would like to see implemented onstage or off?

Welcome to 2022 - we are officially back!

JJI was formed out of an urgent need for action. We grew from five friends in a Facebook thread to a fully functioning 501c3 with a team of 30 full-time volunteers and more than 100 contributors in a matter of six weeks. That speed was essential, but it is not sustainable.⁣
⁣
Tricia Hersey of The Nap Ministry @thenapministry frames rest as vital resistance to the harm caused by white supremacist and capitalist structures, and feeling into those ideals has brought us a lot of clarity around how we want to move as an organization.

Please enjoy and consider these words from the Nap Bishop herself. We hope that as you return to your work in the post-holiday season that you are finding ways to center rest and restoration in your life.

We're almost there!! As Giving Tuesday comes to a close, we're reflecting on what an incredible community we've managed to build over the past 18 months.⁣
⁣
In June of 2020, we were five friends in a Facebook group determined to do move our anger into antiracist action that would forever change the landscape of the American theatre. We were amazed with how quickly our community rallied behind us and pushed JJI and The Assessment into fruition.⁣
⁣
It has been a long 18 months of dissecting and dismantling the current systems and finding ways to rebuild in their place. It will be a long road of continued work. And we are grateful every day to have you, our beautiful community, fighting alongside us.⁣
⁣
We can do this. Together, we will create a safer and more equitable landscape for BIPOC theatre practitioners. We look forward to the day when we can come together to play, explore, and create in bold, brave, safe spaces.⁣

"That was like a curtain opening for me. I didn't realize I had that prejudice." ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The goal of our work is to help arts leaders understand the ways that white supremacy exists within their own organizations and create actionable steps to dismantle it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This can be hard work for many people to confront, but it's essential in order for us to build the safest and most equitable spaces in the entertainment industry and beyond.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Moments like this one from a recent Town Hall of Assessment participants are eye-opening and fulfilling. These are the moments that lead people toward change. These are the moments we aim to create every day.⁣

Inviting BIPOC folks into broken cultures does not fix organizations – it breaks people.⁣
⁣
That's why The Assessment was designed to measure both structure and culture. It's time to do "the work" for real. It's time to make good on the promise of ending systemic racism in the theatre industry. The Joy-Jackson Assessment for Systemic Equity is the first step.⁣
⁣
— WHAT IS THE ASSESSMENT —⁣
The Joy-Jackson Assessment for Systemic Equity is a comprehensive self-assessment tool that guides arts leaders through a series of questions that helps them examine their relationships with BIPOC practitioners. ⁣
⁣
The Assessment was developed using the personal testimonies of more than 100 BIPOC professionals and our community's formal demands for racial equity. It has undergone rigorous peer and professional review from some of our industry's top BIPOC professionals and the next generation of industry leaders. ⁣
⁣
— HOW CAN I HELP? —⁣
This Giving Tuesday, you can directly support the creation and distribution of The Assessment. We are in the final phase of design, currently raising the $35,000 necessary to complete the user interface and make The Assessment accessible to arts organizations nation-wide.⁣
⁣
Can't wait to donate? We get it! You can donate early at the link in our bio!

The Joy-Jackson Initiative Assessment For Systemic Equity asks you to look at your data from a number of different angles – not only who you're hiring, but where your dollars are going, where your time is being invested, and more.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is just a small sampling of some of the things we learned during our 2021 cohort. The results speak for themselves, but since you're listening we've got a few things to point out, too.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1️⃣ Across our entire 2021 Cohort, not a single company employed an Indigenous actor or production team member in their most recent complete season. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2️⃣ We see a significant increase for both Black and Non-Black, Non-Indigenous People of Color when it comes to on stage representation. This leads us to ask: why are we focusing more investment in those who are visible to our audiences? True equity begins backstage. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
3️⃣ The eye-opening discrepancies shown here between how we invest in white vs non-white communities and creators are sobering. While this data was collected from a small sampling of companies participating in our 2021 cohort, the numbers here point to a bigger issue with the institution of the American Theatre industry that needs to be disrupted, dismantled, and rebuilt by the people it is meant to serve. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is the work you're supporting when you make a tax-deductible donation to JJI. Seeing these numbers laid out so clearly to our 2021 Cohort was groundbreaking and is leading to real, tangible change within those organizations.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you're an arts leader who's interested in participating in The Assessment's 2022 cohort, drop us a DM and we'll tell you how you can be the first to know when applications are open.⁣

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Two graphs show the alarming discrepancy in how much money theaters invested in compensating BIPOC vs white creatives, both on stage and off. Source: The Joy-Jackson Assessment for Systemic Equity, 2021 Cohort. A purple square with a title at the top and a graph at the bottom. The title reads: Backstage Salaries - Participants were asked to analyze how much money they had spent in their most recent complete season compensating their production teams. The results are staggering. The graph shows that white participants were compensated at $104,928, Black participants were compensated at $6,040, and other B.I.P.O.C. were compensated at $4,729, while Indigenous participants were not compensated at all. by @joyjacksonnow
