Excited and grateful to see our astronaut guide on this list of @astronautsforamerica https://www.astronautsforamerica.org We had an amazing experience visiting the Kennedy Space Center last year. It took me all this time to figure out just why this trip was so powerful for me in that moment.

I remember during our visit being so proud of American accomplishments even as I was horrified at the direction our country was headed. American history (like all history) has been one long story of side-by-side heroism and villainy. How do you love a country that, since its inception, does incredibly inspiring things and also commits atrocities?

I’ve been reflecting ever since on what patriotism means. True patriotism means protecting and nurturing what’s best about your country, seeing where it’s so broken, and doing your part to fix it. At its core, I think patriotism is loving most the people of your country—and that feeling only expands to humanity itself. We’ve had a group of people put party over country to its destruction and worse, put party over humanity. When it comes right down to it, patriotism boils down to love your neighbor as yourself. Patriotism can even transcend to something far more powerful: agape love.

This past year and half, I’ve been so encouraged by seeing so many people step up and say no to the destruction of our country for the benefit of a few. People who’ve stepped up to protect not only our democratic institutions, but their neighbors and their fellow humans. I’ve seen it in the actions of everyday people and national heroes alike. It’s what keeps giving me hope that we might get through this to build something better on the other side. After all, Americans can do incredible things. My trip to the Kennedy Space Center last year showed me they can even make the impossible possible. ❤️🇺🇸 by @joyjarrettmeredith

Hello friends! Any caring, empathetic person grounded in reality right now is absolutely overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, and depressed. There’s nothing wrong with YOU. That’s all a perfectly appropriate reaction to a SITUATION that is very wrong. And it’s probably making you feel more than a little powerless. But you are not! Remember too that you can’t be courageous if you’re not afraid. It’s okay to be scared at the moment. I sure am. What we can’t be is paralyzed.

One of the most important things you could do right now is to join an organization like Indivisible and throw your energy into helping local election campaigns for the midterms. It doesn’t feel sexy, but it IS how we WILL turn this country around.

Call your reps. Write postcards. Donate to immigrant groups, food banks, campaigns of people running who you believe in. Do phone banks, text banks. Make someone in need a meal. Attend a town hall or a protest.

If all you can do is have a conversation with someone about how NOT normal everything is right now, then you’re doing your part.

Do what you can with what you got in the moment and take care of yourself!

Today I celebrate my fellow Americans who are seeking justice, caring for the least of these, and striving to do right. Those Americans stubbornly still fighting for the ideals this country was founded on, who are standing up and speaking out and saying we have to be better than this. I see you and appreciate all you’re doing. You make me proud to be an American. You give me hope. You’re the light in these dark times.
