One mirror, twice the room 🤍

Our client told us she loves space. The bedroom on this Project isn’t big, so we didn’t stop at how it would look.

We placed a long mirror, lit along its edge, near the oak wall. It isn’t just there to look beautiful. It works as a space enlarger, visually doubling the room and giving our client the sense of spaciousness she asked for.

That’s how we design: we listen first, then make every piece do a job.

What’s the one thing you wish your bedroom had more of?

I thought we were friends. Why do we need a contract?

Working with someone you know can feel easier because there is already a relationship. But familiarity does not always mean you share the same expectations.

When it comes to designing or renovating a home, misunderstandings about fees, responsibilities, timelines and the scope of work can put a strain on even the closest relationships.

I have experienced both sides of this.
I once asked a friend to sign a contract, and she decided not to proceed with the project. On another occasion, I went ahead with a project without a signed agreement, and it became a deeply stressful experience that lasted months.

Both experiences taught me something important: a clear agreement is not a sign of distrust. It is a way of protecting everyone involved.

Whether you are hiring a professional, a friend or a family member, take the time to put your agreement in writing before work begins.

I share more about these experiences and the lessons I learned in my latest blog post.

Every door in this kitchen has a job 🤍

On this Project , we planned the storage before a single cabinet was made. Shelves in the amber glass units that lift down to you. A drawer tucked under the hob. Pull-out shelves for the cups. Swing trays that put the awkward corner to work. A larder that slides out, so nothing gets lost at the back. The bin and cleaning things live beside the sink.
And behind one oak panel, a door you would never spot.

When everything has a place, a home stays calm, even on your busiest day. Working out those places is our job, so it doesn’t have to be yours.

Which would you want first: the pull-out larder or the hidden door?

What a day at IDAN × Design Week Lagos! 🇳🇬

I walked the halls and left full of ideas. I admired beautiful handmade textiles, and saw ceramics and woodwork made right here at home. Nigerian craft has so much soul, and seeing it sit beside world-class design reminded me why I love what I do.

Thank you to every maker who shared their work and their stories. I’m taking all of this inspiration straight back into the studio, and I can’t wait to show you how it shapes our next spaces.

Which piece would you take home? Tell me below 👇

DO NOT HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER ‼️

Check out our latest blog - 5 things you should know before hiring an interior designer plus a personal story. Link in bio.

#interiordesignerinlagos by @joylenestudios

A while ago, a lovely couple approached us to renovate their home. We were excited about the project, and so were they. But somewhere along the way, I realised we had two very different ideas of what an interior designer does.

They were happy with their home in the end, but it wasn’t the experience I wanted for myself as a designer. My goal has always been to make both the experience and the final result beautiful.

That experience taught me a valuable lesson. So if you’re thinking of hiring an interior designer, here are five things I’d love you to know before you begin. Swipe through ➡️

A closet planned around a real routine 🤍

On this project, we carved out space for a walk-in closet and gave every item a home. Long gowns have room to hang. Wigs have their own shelf. Bags sit by size, from totes to medium bags to purses. Slippers, boots, sneakers and stilettos each have a place.

We don’t just design how a room looks. We think about how it will be used every single day, so getting ready is easy and nothing has to be hunted for. That thinking is our job, so it doesn’t have to be yours.

What’s the one thing you can never find when you’re getting dressed?

3 decisions that made this kitchen:

1. The marble slab backsplash. Tiles have grout that turns brown after a while, so I used a slab: smooth, easy to clean, and it stays clean and beautiful.

2. The pot filler. Ease of cooking: they do not need to walk back and forth between the cooker and the sink.

3. Wood + glass. Wood brings warmth, glass keeps it light, so a full wall of cabinets never feels heavy and their favourite pieces are on display.

Which of the three would you want in your kitchen?

Her reaction says it all 🥹

On reveal day, I walked my client into her new bedroom and told her: I want you to feel pampered, to feel hugged, to feel cared. This room is about warmth, about coziness, about soft life.

Her answer: “Yes, soft life.” 🤍

She loves space, so we placed a long big mirror to visually double the room. She loves nature and green, so I added touches of green everywhere on a natural neutral palette. And when I saw the little water fountain by her bed, I thought of calmness.

Designed around her, from concept to soft life.

What would make your bedroom feel like a hug?
