What does a healthy vaginal microbiome actually look like? According to Dr. Sarah, boring is a good thing.

Unlike the gut, where microbiome diversity can be beneficial, the vaginal microbiome is healthiest when Lactobacillus is the dominant bacteria. These protective bacteria help maintain the vaginal pH and create an environment that makes it harder for unwanted bacteria to thrive.

During perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen can change the vaginal tissue, reduce Lactobacillus, and increase vaginal pH, which may make issues like bacterial vaginosis and UTIs more likely.
