Moved to Little Rock & spent the summer saying goodbye to Indy friends (& officiating Marsela & Hannah’s wedding), grading AP Lang exams in Cleveland (& running into a familiar face!!), & being welcomed back by Arkansan friends & fam. Florence, Rome, and (briefly) Helsinki— we seriously planned this trip for a YEAR but we’ve been talking about it since approx 2020. “One day” when we finally make enough money, we’ll go to Italy. In five years. In ten. Maybe when we retire…

But we’re not promised tomorrow, so let’s do it imperfectly today. In an economy seat, finagling loyalty miles, carefully budgeting payments across the last 10 months, walking everywhere, no new outfits, carry-ons only, sharing a bedroom the whole time. Whatever it takes to make it exist!!!! We’re still young— we can handle it!!

We fly back tomorrow!! Thanks for those who followed along on my stories. We had a blast!! And I’m teaching again on Monday!! 🤠 wish me luck on the jet lag— I need it! taken in Rome, Italy by @joyous.jo

Haven’t posted on here in 4 months. Turned 26, finished Gatsby w/my indescribably wonderful students, & met my niece🪿 We’ve almost survived the winter!

“Work Hard, Play Hard: The Summer of Saying Yes,” an initiative by Jordan Michelle Smith

After finishing my Master’s and my TFA service, I decided I needed to say a whole lot of YES to make up for two years of “No, I’m busy.” In chronological order: a flight to Oklahoma to see Mackenzie, a magical birthday trip with Ciaj to Disney, a drive through St. Louis to hold Halsey’s hand front-row at her concert, a stop in Fayetteville for karaoke with Karina and countless friend meetups alllllll the way down to Monticello to touch Karsyn’s baby bump for the first time & see the fam, then back up to Indy to catch a flight to NYC for a week to hang with Dellynn (& Nina & Cali!) & see THREEEEEEE Broadway shows, among other things. I fly back to reality tomorrow.

If you haven’t heard, I’m staying in Indy for 2 more years to follow my village— my group of kids I’ve been mentoring since their freshman year— through graduation. I’m back to work in less than two days… but rest assured, I crammed a lot of living into these few measly weeks!

Long time, no see. The trend in these pics: I get by with a little help from my friends!

Key points: like $2k worth of community-funded supplies for my kiddos (thank you, I love you, and you won’t believe how fast that pile disappeared), my cat (Buddy) and Alexys’s dog (Hoosier), magic with Rosie, poetry with Elizabeth, one step closer to the Master’s with Jayden, and a reminder from Marsela. As the next school year approaches, here’s a little Indianapolis update for y’all!

One year down as a high school English teacher— I taught all grades (9-12) in SOME capacity. I gave it my all and I *think* the kids can tell. I love the students so, so much. I can’t get into details or I’ll cry. Coming up this year… AP Lang (😱), English 11/12 (but COMPOSITION this time 📝), continuing to have the highest Village GPA (😤 SMITH VILLAGE!!!), and finishing out this Master’s degree.

On a sadder note, my sweet Snow passed away the same day I won Humanities Teacher of the Year. That’s a pretty good example of the highs and lows. Thank a teacher! taken in Indianapolis, Indiana by @joyous.jo
