There can be no "improved systems", "systems change" or "equity" without firm commitments to liberation, anti-racism and dismantling the harmful systems we have. Operating in the same ways won't get us there. It will require radical work and a radical vision...but there's nothing new under the sun. Black feminists, womanists and revolutionaries BEEN saying and doing this. They've laid out the blueprint. Let's get FREE!!

I will forever be honored to be able to bring that perspective into the room. There is a better way, and I'm going to continue to stand alongside others to put it into practice. Grateful that I was able to join 60 early childhood leaders from across the country at Lone Rock Retreat Center in Bailey, CO to reimagine early childhood systems and map out what is possible.

The environment was breathtakingly beautiful (literally, at about 9,000 ft altitude) and the space catered to all of our needs. I still can't believe this lil girl from Greenville, NC was able to stand alongside giants in the field, in the beautiful mountains, helping produce change that will ripple throughout the country.

Hoping everyone enjoyed their Black August and that you learned something, grew a little and experienced peace & happiness. If we say we care about families, babies, mamas, fathers, birthing people, youth, etc we must also care about how they are fed, housed and treated. Health outcomes improve when people have their basic needs met with dignity and compassion.

Let's make sure our actions align with our words.

Thank you Councilmember Burris and City Council for proclaiming Black Maternal Health Week in Durham. It takes a village. Huge thanks to each and every individual who works daily to restore the village so that people and families have what they need to thrive.

Say their names: Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy

If you don't know who they are, they are definitely worth the Google search. These teen girls were sacrificed and experimented on to establish the practice we now know as obstetrics and gynecology. The experimental surgeries performed on them stemmed from the evil need ensure Black females who were enslaved continued to procreate & produce free labor. Here are some cliff notes:

* given dozens of surgeries without consent or anesthesia
* scholars believe them to be between 16 and 18 years old
* procedures were so inhumane even the (yte) assistants quit and refused to participate
* many of the same procedures practiced on them are still used today

This monument (in Montgomery, AL where they were heinously experimented on) honors, celebrates and memorializes Anarcha, Betsey, Lucy and the Black women we may never learn the names of who were put through the same torture.

They endured this torture less than 100 years ago (1840s). Never forget.
