🎉 BIG NEWS, DENVER! 🎉
Joys Kitchen, a Kinship Mutual Aid Foundation project is now proud partners with Ascend Recovery Solutions-
And …

Joy’s Kitchen and Kinship Mutual Aid Foundation are now official PARTNERS with Food Bank of the Rockies! 🧡

For over a year, Joy’s Kitchen has been at the whim of other organizations. We moved again and again, starting over each time. Through every change we stayed committed to one thing: serving the underserved. We made it through, and we’re still here offering specialized services and larger pop-up distributions. Now we have a powerful team behind us.

📍 Where to find us now: Ascend Recovery Solutions in Lakewood, our home base while we look for a larger site so we can bring indoor and large distributions back.

🥕 Coming soon:
✔️ Walk-up food boxes (times to be announced!)
✔️ Larger pop-up events that nourish the community on non-inclement-weather days

We are incredibly proud of our partnerships and the wings of these angels! taken in Denver, Colorado by @joyskitchen_org

**💛 A Note on Consent at Joy’s Kitchen 💛**

At Joy’s Kitchen, consent is at the heart of everything we do. Our neighbors deserve to receive food with dignity and privacy.

**That’s why Meta glasses, smart glasses, and any AI or recording eyewear are not allowed while volunteering, ever.** Wearing an outward-facing recording device puts our sensitive and vulnerable guests at risk. Some of the spaces we serve in are protected by health privacy laws like HIPAA, and recording there can violate those protections. Above all, recording people without their knowledge is a non-consensual practice we do not stand behind.

From time to time, Joy’s Kitchen staff and leaders capture photos or video to share our work. When we do, our community is informed and consent is given beforehand. We ask everyone else, including volunteers and visitors, to refrain from recording.

No photos, video, or audio of anyone without their clear, express permission. Please leave recording devices at home.

“To help depression with my mom’s passing, I started to make soup for a lot of people, and then that turned into looking for food donations, and then the food donations opened up this world of waste that we have...”
When Kathy Stanley lost her mom to pancreatic cancer in 2012, she navigated her grief by serving others. “I think having the reality of death at my door and mortality and just this human condition of the world broke my heart.”
She started making soups and eventually looked to her community to help source ingredients. “I asked for donations, and this guy showed up at my door, literally, with his car packed full of weird boxes of food, lots of bread, and he was like, ‘Can you do something with this?’”’
Taken back by his carload of food, Kathy investigated and discovered grocery stores were throwing away all of the things people like her - a mom of 4 children - were struggling to afford. She couldn’t shake seeing good food being wasted while people were going hungry, so she took action.
Kathy started @joyskitchen_org to rescue, sort and distribute food to families across Colorado. And since 2012 (full-time since 2017), she’s worked with 6,000 volunteers, 2 trucks and 2 trailers to rescue 7 million pounds of food, feeding 5,000 families per month!
-
Nowadays, she’s even starting the Kinship Mutual Aid Foundation to support organizers of good projects with health insurance, steady pay, etc. because, in the past, she’s relied heavily on musical festivals and events to fund her work. And though her path has challenged her mentally and financially, Kathy has never waived from her passion!
“When we pull out of that whirlwind and see the waste that we produce. Every day is really hard when people are starving. And there doesn’t need to be. There literally doesn’t need to be hunger. So I saw that and went forward with this little project on the basis that I really understand that one person can change the world.
I’m number 7785. Thanks @robs10kfriends for the morning hang! taken in Denver, Colorado by @joyskitchen_org

It’s September 1st, and we’re starting the month at an all-time low in giving.

If Joy’s Kitchen is going to remain open and rebuild toward normal capacity, we need our community behind us.

$10 matters.
Seriously.

If even a small portion of the people who follow and support Joy gave $10 today, it would make an immediate difference.

Give to Joy. Help us stay open. Help us keep feeding people.

These last two weeks have undoubtedly been some of the hardest Joy’s Kitchen and its future have known in 15 years. We have faced challenges I have not spoken publicly about that threatened getting food to people and threatened everything we have worked for.

I have also had to make some very important changes in my life and in this organization.

For so long, Joy’s has been a family-run, grassroots project. It was built that way. Carried that way. Loved that way.

Now I am stepping Joy’s out of being held only as a family project and into something with deeper foundational stability — a foundation of hope, Kinship, food, love, and community that can carry this work forward beyond any one person or family.

What we are and how we are for people will not change.

Yesterday Katie and I had so much fun doing rescue for the Denver Indian Center and filling the truck to the brim with food for families in the Westwood area.

Holding hope, it turns out, can look like a ripe tomato.

And serving love is the foundation of Kinship.

This is my mission. This is my life. And as long as my legs have steps in them, I will do everything I can to save good food from waste and make it available for others to eat.

Katie and I make a fantastic team, and as we lead from the center of the heart of the mother, we know each step is guided by mission, heart, and love — not only for our families, but for every family who cannot afford to put healthy food on the table.

Let’s thrive together. taken in Denver Indian Center, Inc. by @joyskitchen_org

We believe hunger is not solved by simply handing somebody a box of food. It’s solved by building relationships, welcoming the people, inviting people in reducing waste, sharing resources in creating communities, where everybody understands that they have something valuable to contribute.. @joyskitchen_org #joyskitchen #gratitude #savejoy #showup #truesupport #d3arts by @joyskitchen_org
