I’m so thrilled to see @notpi doing so well in Dragula and bringing that silly Philly energy to the stage and screen! This is the third piece to premiere so far that I worked on for Pi—the first was the wispy Ghost Train blue bodysuit, followed by a black-to-white gradient on the arms of the Black and White tickle monster. Pi wowed us all with another top placement and impeccably embodied Orc Warrior—and I was one of many hands on this piece, to create a convincing warrior bodysuit.
Normally I start with a couple midtones and add my lights and darks in last, but as you can see here I started with my shadows and highlights, then worked in a world of greens and pinks to bring out the skin texture and scarring. Pi has played across the entire spectrum of gender during this season of Dragula, and like many artists I love the chance to show off my anatomy skills when the specs call for a muscle babe. Extra special thanks to @ebonymalaika , who put up with SO many drag-tv-antics which came in and out of the home studio in the last year, for the patience and kindness as this project took up half the front room so I could paint and still get a little sun in my eyes. This Orc Warrior landed in the top placement and is sharpening his axe to slay another day!

Let’s talk about @sapphiracristal ‘s Drag Race finale eleganza dress! I designed this piece and Sapphira designed the staff/spear. Unlike the other pieces of this project, I didn’t have hands on the piece beyond that— the incredible @geoffreymac made the dress; @abrahamdlevy made the corset; and @edithwigglesandgiggles and @greg_laut made the staff/spear! And we all won when she stepped out on that finale runway to the gasps, not just of the audience, but people watching around the country and world. Privately I called this look the Blue Valkyrie, because valkyries herald victory and no warrior can take them down. It was an honor to design for any runway in my friend’s Drag Race package; to make her feel so beautiful in such a special moment was even more wonderful. And yes, there is a peekaboo butt moment in the back of the dress!

It’s so vindicating to see @thecrystalenvy in the top once again, and have the wonderful conceptualization, fashion references, and hard work in making this puffer fish look shouted out! @sabinedream13 was the brilliance behind sewing this magical inflating dress and @edith made the shoes, spikes, and earrings. I painted the whole thing, starting with the inflatable spikes and ending with the shoes—and if you look at the shoulder on Crystal’s right you’ll see I even hid a CE in the patterning to make sure everyone was very clear on just who was knocking them dead on the runway with every look! Honoring Crystal’s desire to make the many browns of the puffer fish beautiful, interesting, and “fashion” was a fun challenge, and the total square footage in painting such a three dimensional look was quite surprising. As a little visual pun, and fun way to infuriate my seascape-science friends, I intentionally mixed the patterning and coloring of the puffer fish with the blowfish—two distinctly different fish—and wound up learning a lot about both of them in order to honor the concept and final look. I’m so proud of, and proud to know, Crystal and the creative team and everyone who is working their butts off on delivering drag excellence to the runway every week—and what a week for airbrush, it was so cool to see how many looks used one of my favorite art tools so beautifully. Swim on, you sultry sirens!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @alexander.great.king !
Your presence hit my life like a meteor strike, and the connection we’ve built after filming—especially in the year since we celebrated your birthday at @buckwylde_dragking ‘s @meowwolfgrapevine show—has led to countless adventures, magical moments, and creative collaborations which wouldn’t be possible without you. You’re the same kind of crazy as I am, when it comes to art, and your compassion has helped me out of some real low places.

Let’s talk about this bodysuit! One of my callings in this life is to help more people feel the power of their abilities as designers and concept artists. It is incredibly satisfying to see the change in people’s energy and demeanor when they embody their own design for the first time, and get to see this thing which only existed in their mind brought into reality! When Alexander brought me his concept sketches, featuring imagery which was meaningful to him and expressed his identity, I stayed as true as possible to his original designs so he could see and enjoy his own “hand” throughout the piece. We all have a unique artistic vision, and the quality of Alexander’s artistry is what got him to television stardom and meaningful legislative activism. I loved using my skills to honor and celebrate that artistry!

Art and excellence never exists in a void—there are countless helping hands along the way. One of those, for me, has been the support of @baphometstudio in my projects over the last year! Baphomet Studio provides luxe hair, nails, lashes, skin services, waxing and more. They don’t just practice what they believe in by hiring skillful members of the queer, trans, alt, and creative communities and giving them a place to hone these beautifying abilities even further—Baphomet Studio provides an environment which makes us members of the queer, trans, alt, creative communities feel safe and comfortable to work with stylists to become our most fully realized selves. And the studio aesthetic itself is great for process selfies while you’re being worked on, it’s a perfect balance of cute and fierce!

I’ve been going to Baphomet Studio for facial waxing, myself, which doesn’t just help me when I have to precision-paint Henlo but gives me confidence in my looks and presentation in every form I choose to wear. I’m just one of many Philly artists who have @baphometstudio to thank for the ways we’ve been able to elevate our vision and outcomes with their support. In fact, there’s a good chance that one of the weird, queer Philly events in the last year which made you say “WOW!” got a helping hand (or in my case, claw) from Baphomet Studio too.

If you’re looking for a new way to elevate your look, I can’t recommend Baphomet Studio enough, because they are practicing what they believe in with making more and better ways for our community to dream and be and become everything we know we are!

As a lifelong fanartist and fanfic writer, I can tell you that fanart isn’t just a way to personalize the art which means so much to us—for the people who receive it, fanart is literally lifechanging.

Do you have opinions about the show and season? YOU can navigate how season 2 of King of Drag will go with your artistry!

There are some unbelievable hills and valleys on the emotional rollercoaster which our new cast is about to undertake as we all watch the results of their hard work together, and there is nothing like fanart to help them survive the lowest of lows when they arrive.

The kings KNOW and REMEMBER your fanart. It has the power to change their day, their outlook, their emotions for the better as the inevitable discourse from the armchair quarterbacks of art sports weigh in on every moment.

I have a folder on my phone of Henlo Bullfrog fanart to remind me of my north star when I’m feeling lost—that not everyone may “get” my art, but the people who matter are the ones that do. Art makes life better, and even the most cursed, shitty fanart (my favorite kind, honestly) contributes to the legacy of the drag king scene, and to the legacy of the brotherhood of King of Drag castmates, as warm and supportive and welcoming.

In every performance of @catsjellicleball , five of my airbrushed pieces appear on the runway and have been appearing from the off-Broadway debut at @pac_nyc to The Jellicle Ball’s massive splash on Broadway. I’m a tiny part of a gigantic production, but to be a part of the team bringing @qween_jean ‘s Tony-winning costume design to life, and have my name listed as a contributor in every playbill, is the coming-true of a dream I wouldn’t have dared to even imagine for myself.

@irisspectre and @zsazsadali have painted with me for both the off-Broadway and Broadway runs of the production, and talked me down from many a panicked moment and sudden call when this wonderful work was more than I could handle alone.

I got to see both runs of the production, first with my dad and @knottasimulation , my partner, who saw it both times, the second time on Broadway alongside me and a group of fellow creatives including Zsa Zsa, @aerarius_metalworks , @cyruskstratton , and @alexander.great.king ! The last runway video was taken by @ellen.j.bass .

Many of the most amazing moments in my artistic career are things which, if I’d set them as a goal and worked toward them my whole life, still might not have been achievable. The ways in which circumstance, luck, connections, and being prepared for the opportunity which arrives—it constantly surprises me and has taught me to approach my own future with a lighter touch. I’m building a foundation for what comes next, but we’ll all discover together what shape that takes.

Congratulations to Qween Jean, the entire Cats: The Jellicle Ball team, and thank you to my painters and to my incredible friends. We are made great by the love in our life, and everything I do is a testament to how well they’ve loved me ❤️‍🔥

Crisis and Comfort.

I’ve been on both sides of this equation too many times to count, and tried to capture the experience of both with these ambiguous figures. Each, hopefully, feels familiar. Comfort’s four arms bring all different approaches to their act, catching Crisis, holding them, supporting them, helping them. And Crisis’s four legs cling, kick, hang and thrash as the feeling moves through them in waves.

Although I intended to render this farther, I think the ambiguity and impressionistic approach to some of the details makes this exactly what it needs to be. I recognize myself in the painting. I hope others do too.

Henlo among the honeysuckle.

The air in PA is heavy with its scent right now, which always calls up the memory of walking home from kindergarten, hand in hand with my mother, who taught me to taste the nectar when the flowers were in bloom.

I wear both honeysuckle and amber in my daily life and stage persona to invoke her, 20 years since we last saw each other—honeysuckle for the flowers surrounding her; the garden that she said made her feel rich. Amber for the solid perfume she wore, opening its little wooden box lid like sharing a secret treasure.

In the Poconos, the lilacs waft down the block first, then the honeysuckle. In Philadelphia, the ripe honeysuckle overtaking city smells signals that it will be time to pick mulberries soon, visiting my favorite trees in the West Philly neighborhood with Tupperware or the bowl of my hat to catch them. Relishing the stains on my hands before I rinse my haul and eat them on top of ice cream.

That’s what honeysuckle means to me.

Our class full of Austin monsters, makers and soon-to-be-monsters at @coco_coquette really fed my soul not with brains but with brainy, enthusiastic people who weren’t afraid to really play and get into the supplies and techniques I shared with them! We broke the ice with the traditional mouth blood capsule technique and took it from there with wounds, bruising, blood effects, zombie contours, latex buildups, rapid fire makeup Q&A and more!

This is a Timelapse I made the night before I started teaching the 5 day pneumatic sprayer course at @cobatstudiosbackdrops

Using the HVLP sprayer and detail sprayer to share some of my approach, including working big to small; messy to clean; pushing and pulling my painted sections; and moving my hand and spray gun through the depth of space in front of my painted surface to change the mark making technique!
