In the wake of recent USAID/PEPFAR funding cuts that have shuttered queer-friendly clinics, many LGBTQI+ youth are left without clear, stigma-free pathways to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment.

💥 Affirming Healthcare in Jozi is a one-day workshop that tackles this urgent gap by spotlighting affirming public healthcare options, queer-friendly, and peer-reviewed insights from the community itself.

🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈Good experience at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital – HRTs 🏥🩺💊
• For those who used to get their HRTs through WITS RHI – get in touch with WITS RHI and they will help you make an appointment. (This person even got a call from WITS RHI checking if they’d managed to get their meds!)
• No walk-ins
• No need to bring files
• Wait time: about 30 minutes
• Staff were friendly, professional, and didn’t ask invasive questions
• You’ll start a new patient file and fill in some paperwork
• You’ll give your patient history verbally (no need for previous scripts, but take them if you have them)
• You’ll be asked about previous dosage
• Be honest if you stopped treatment and when — they were not judgmental
• You’ll get an appointment card with your next date and time by @joziqueershare

- 💔 After the clinics closed, this is what was left behind.

❝ I would rather stop taking my meds than go to a public clinic that misgenders me. ❞
❝ They made me sit in a separate line with a green card. Everyone knew I was HIV positive. ❞
❝ Some clinics shut down with only two days’ notice. Patients only found out by word of mouth. ❞

These are not just quotes. These are people’s lives.

Since PEPFAR/USAID funding cuts, many queer-friendly HIV and gender-affirming services have been shut down. The result? Lost jobs. Lost medication. Lost dignity.

Public clinics often come with discrimination, long queues, and zero understanding of trans or queer health needs. For some, the fear of stigma is so deep, they’d rather stop treatment entirely.

📢 We cannot be silent.
📢 We cannot let our people suffer in shame and fear.

Help us build visibility, advocate for affirming care, and fight back against systemic neglect.

Are you a young queer student or person in Johannesburg looking for PrEP, PEP, HIV Testing & Counseling, or ARVs?

🏥 Hillbrow Community Health Clinic remains one of the accessible public clinics offering free sexual health services. Since the withdrawal of Pepfar support and the closure of many specialised services.

🔎 WHAT YOU CAN ACCESS:
– PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
– PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
– HIV Testing & Counseling
– ARV treatment

📌 IMPORTANT INFO:
🆔 SA Citizens: Bring your ID or driver’s licence
🛂 Foreign Nationals: Bring a valid passport

⏰ Due to high demand, expect long queues. If you’re a student:
– Wake up early – clinic gets full fast
– Try not to go on a test/exam day
– If you’re working, ask for leave – you can request a clinic letter for proof

We’re excited to share that the Affirming Healthcare in Jozi workshop will feature a archival display from the GALA Queer Archives, spotlighting the fierce history of queer HIV/AIDS activism in South Africa. 🏳️‍🌈📚💉

💔 As we face new struggles like funding cuts, stigma, and healthcare exclusion, this display invites us to learn from the past — and build a more affirming future.

Following recent USAID/PEPFAR funding cuts, which have resulted in the closure of several queer-friendly clinics and services, many LGBTQI+ youth are left without clear pathways to stigma-free HIV prevention, testing, and treatment.

This campaign aims to empower queer students in and around Braamfontein with the information they need to access available resources, build community dialogue, and foster knowledge-sharing around affirming sexual health services.

We stress that this campaign relies on community engagement and participation, giving tips based on personal experiences on how and where to access services.
