Wishing if I had a photograph of you. I’m sitting here looking at photos of the two of us on the day you died. And even eight years later, I can’t help but see that I’m your child. And how grateful I still am that I was allowed to be your child. I love that I have your long, slender hands, your soft lips, and your beautiful, warm eyes. It’s strange how, at some point, we stop seeing ourselves for who we are and instead choose to live in our outward appearances, comparing ourselves to others. Is it because some of us didn’t receive our parents’ love, or because our parents’ love for us fades, or because we’re simply unable to feel it? I was - and still am - very fortunate to have not only sensed but also truly felt your love. Even now, eight years after your death, I feel it very clearly. You loved us doubly: as both a father and a mother at the same time. You were able to do that. You had so much love - and not just for us. Years later, after I’d spent countless happy afternoons with your best friend, my godmother, I realized that you’d entrusted me to her - she who couldn’t have children. So that your best friend’s love would never stop flowing. Love has many faces. You knew that if someone couldn’t pass it on to their own children, it had to find other ways. And you also knew that there are so many people who need love. In your own circle, among your friends, but also in the world. You were kind, compassionate, and often good-natured to a fault. As a child, I often thought that your gentleness caused things to turn out to your disadvantage. But when I saw how many people cared for you during your illnesses, looked after you, and how many people came to say goodbye to you, I knew that those who hadn’t appreciated you didn’t deserve to understand what an immensely loving - and therefore, rich - person you were - and still are, as I can still feel it so clearly within me. I wish I could still take photos of the two of us. I miss you.

The torrential, Dionysian flow in our narrow veins. Samuel Finzi is celebrated with standing ovations for his obsessive performance as Tiresias in Javor Gardev’s staging of Euripides‘ tragedy The Bacchae at the prestigious Athens Epidaurus Festival.

The fragile resilience of human boundaries. Samuel Finzi is Tiresias in Javor Gardev’s staging of Euripides' tragedy The Bacchae. In this play a critical question takes centre stage: how much destabilisation can a society endure? How does the collective body metabolise an event - mentally, psychologically, and politically - before it hardens into trauma? The tragedy becomes a reckoning with the limits of orderliness, testing the resilience of both rules and institutions alike. In Euripides’ vision, Dionysian ecstasy is no carefree celebration; it is a trial for civilisation itself, pushing to extremes our obsession with control, custom, law, and self-image. The premiere will be at the renowned Athens Epidaurus Festival on 10. July 2026.
