I'm excited to announce that I'm going to be a part of this... Valerie Porr is a world renowned expert in BPD and these upcoming classes contain information that are game changers.

One of the hardest parts of living with Borderline Personality Disorder isn’t only the intensity of the emotions.

It’s feeling like the people you love don’t understand what is happening inside you.

At the same time, families are often trying their best to make sense of experiences that can feel confusing, frightening, or overwhelming. When no one has a shared understanding, people can begin assuming the worst about one another.

That is why psychoeducation matters.

It doesn’t tell families whom to blame, and it doesn’t reduce a person to a diagnosis. It gives everyone a better map helping loved ones understand emotional sensitivity, relationship fears, triggers, dysregulation, and the meaning that may exist underneath behavior.

I’ll be joining Valerie Porr in TARA’s upcoming family education class and helping explain BPD from the inside like what certain experiences can feel like, how misunderstandings develop, and what responses may help create greater safety, trust, and connection.

My hope is that families leave with more than information. I hope they leave more curious about one another, less certain of their worst assumptions, and better able to have conversations that protect both compassion and accountability.

If you live with BPD and have ever wished someone close to you understood you better, this may be a valuable class to share with them.

Below are studies related to this topic and if the links don't work you can always put in the pmid number or DOI number into any search engine and they should come up.

1. Analyzing Language Use in BPD

Tell Me About Yourself: Analyzing self-referential language use in borderline personality disorder
Focus: Looks at how people with BPD use language differently in terms of emotional tone and patterns — relevant to understanding internal expression of emotion.
🔗 PubMed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39536504/

🧠 2. Expressive Language Disturbance in BPD

Expressive language disturbance in borderline personality disorder in response to emotional autobiographical stimuli
Focus: Demonstrates specific deficits in expressive language complexity (lexical and syntactic aspects) when people with BPD respond to emotionally salient prompts.
🔗 PubMed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22686220/

🧠 3. Mentalizing and BPD

Study of mentalizing ability in borderline personality disorder: Relationship with impulsivity (2023)
Focus: Shows that people with BPD have reduced ability to mentalize (understand mental states), and this is related to impulsivity — reflecting how internal state inference and meaning-making can break down.
🔗 Cambridge University Press: https://doi.org/10.1192/j.eurpsy.2023.310

This ties directly into how people with BPD interpret their own feelings and others’ actions — a linguistic–cognitive function.

🧠 4. Empathy, Alexithymia & Theory of Mind in BPD

Empathy, Alexithymia, and Theory of Mind in Borderline Personality Disorder
Focus: Links alexithymia (difficulty identifying and describing feelings) with social perception deficits and misinterpretation of emotional cues, contributing to how internal states are labeled linguistically and socially.
🔗 PubMed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32520852/

🧠 5. Alexithymia & BPD Symptom Associations

Focus: Shows alexithymia’s relationship with identity disturbance in BPD — emphasizing the cognitive linguistics of self-description and internal state labeling.
🔗 PubMed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40875397/

Overcoming borderline personality disorder a family guide by Valerie Porr.
Online - TARA4BPD - Classes are very helpful.
Not super familiar but emotions matter is another group online. I went to one of their free group sessions that was helpful. also I can't recommend enough just looking up neurological studies... that said I would try to stick to stuff that is at least within the last 10 years because there's been so much neurological information that has reshaped experts understanding and placed us firmly in the category of neurodivergent as well as this being genetic.

So I meander a bit in this video but it's an important topic and I do eventually get to talking about the neurological underpinnings that cause this. These are just a few studies having to do with the topic. If you highlight and put the PMID number or doi number in search you'll find these but there are many more if you just put the topic in and search.

17th Trait of BPD from Valerie Porr world renowned BPD expert based on irrefutable neurological evidence for. A tidbit from her - there are 17 traits of Borderline and they all are neurologically based, Subjective Distress (perceived social rejection), Self-referential processing, Attention bias to the negative, Limited distress tolerance, Action to Escape, Memory deficits (anterior and retrograde amnesia), Shame, Doesn’t experience a sense of belonging or connectedness, Doesn’t perceive caring relationships, Oxytocin (trust and neural connection deficits), Sleep disturbances, Alexithymia, Difficulty with ambiguity, Hypervigilance from high cortisol, Impaired decision making, Hypersensitivity and Anxiety. These are all caused by neurological differences we have irrefutable evidence for. Put these traits on your refrigerator, educate your friends and family members, and tell every therapist you can. We must do what we can to make the world safer for them. This is not their fault. There is so much stigma about this disorder. After this class, if your heart's not broken for them… you have a heart of stone. - Valerie Porr from Borderline family session 2, 2021.
