Dad, I can't believe it's been 5 years. I always dread this date arriving and I've been dreading it even more than usual this year. It feels like yesterday we were texting making plans to visit. Yet I've grown so much since that horrible day that looking back it almost feels like it was a different lifetime. I know we didn't always get along, but I know you were just doing your best to raise a sad, angry, confused little queer kid. And I know no matter how much we fought you never stopped loving me. I wish you could see me now that I am finally myself. I wish we got to hang out on the other side of it all and look back and laugh (and cry) about everything. I hope you would be proud of me.
