turned 26 and ran away to the keys

shoutout to @jperez.lx for the best bday surprise by @jperez.lx

@vouscon every year is a marker of how God has moved in my life, and this year was no different. From my very first VOUSCon in 2022, I knew this was where God wanted me to be. After He released me from an unhealthy church environment, He brought me and @instagracy to VOUS and surrounded us with people who would care for us and challenge us to grow, both professionally and spiritually. That shepherding is what God used to call me back to serve in His house.

In 2023, I experienced my first VOUSCon as a staff member. I came in ready to run the show, thinking I was prepared. But God humbled me, and I surrendered it all to Him. When 2024 came around, He was using me in ways I had only dreamed of. Again, I thought I was ready to program and operate in the arena. But God was still maturing me, and once again, I had to surrender it back to Him.

This year, I came in with no expectations or desire to run the console. I was just excited to be a fly on the wall and watch @daviskornegay work his magic. But on the morning of the first day, something happened that made it impossible for Davis to operate that night. In my naivety, I thought he’d be back, so I simply kept the seat warm, browsing through his show file. Then, around 3 p.m., our programming director let me know that he actually wasn’t coming back.

That’s when the anxiety set in and the dark thoughts of “Can I actually do this?” started to creep in. But I put my head down and did all I could to fill in the blanks from our first meeting. Somehow, everything went better than I could have imagined. I couldn’t believe it, I had just run lights for the first time in an arena.

This year reminded me and so many others of the importance of humility and the high cost of comparison. So many people look to Instagram, the production highlight reel. While it can be a great place for inspiration, it can also be a costly place for your self-esteem.

To anyone out there wishing they were “living the dream,” just surrender it to God. You have no idea the seats He’s preparing for you at tables you haven’t even imagined. by @jperez.lx

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂 𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈!

God has truly surpassed what I thought was possible for me. Years ago I would’ve called you crazy if you told me that I’d be doing lighting and designing stages for a living, let alone for an event like VOUSCon. Lighting has always been my passion but I didn’t know where it would take me.
Thank you Jesus for saving me, calling me back to your house, and for turning my passion into my calling.

It’s been surreal seeing something you initially drafted a year before come to life. Thanks @gtpro and @mj_led for making it a reality 🤍 by @jperez.lx
