Sheriff Bilal, President Judge Nina Padilla and Administrative Judge Anders: Take a stand and ban ICE from the CJC!

WHO'S IN CHARGE? END KIDNAPPINGS AT CRIMINAL JUSTICE CENTER

Sheriff Rochelle Bilal, President Judge Nina Wright Padilla and Administrative Judge Daniel Anders point fingers at anyone else but themselves for who's responsible for allowing immigrants to be detained by ICE agents at the CJC in Philadelphia.

No ICE Philly rallied outside the Criminal Justice Center (CJC) on July 22 to demand an end to ICE kidnappings inside and around the facility. Activists sang, chanted, held signs, distributed literature and facilitated teach-ins to educate passersby on ICE's targeting of the CJC. Those with power at CJC -- Sheriff Rochelle Bilal, President Judge Nina Wright Padilla and Administrative Judge Daniel Anders -- have all shirked responsibility for not impeding ICE.

While Sheriff Bilal says ICE is not allowed to make arrests inside CJC, ICE continues to stalk community members inside the building, President Judge Wright Padilla says the kidnappings are an administrative issue, and Administrative Judge Anders claims the President Judge needs to address the issue. As they continue to point fingers and expose their lack of courage to take a stand, Philadelphia's community members continue to be kidnapped as they seek access to justice, whether they are a plaintiff, defendant, witness, or loved one.

At the conclusion of the rally, activists marched to the Philadelphia ICE Field Office to join New Sanctuary Movement's weekly vigil for those in ICE detention and their families.

No ICE Philly is encouraging the public to call the offices of Sheriff Bilal (215-686-3560), President Judge Wright Padilla (215-686-7038) and Administrative Judge Anders (215-686-7917) to demand an end to ICE kidnappings at CJC.

No ICE Philly is an all-volunteer effort to mobilize Philadelphians to take action against ICE kidnappings. Begun in September 2025, it now runs several campaigns pressuring City officials and corporations that collaborate with ICE or profit from ICE activity.

Vigil for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Over 200 people, outraged by two more killings of immigrant workers by ICE agents in the last week, held a vigil at Philadelphia City Hall July 14.

Organized by JUNTOS, Make the Road Pennsylvania, Vietlead, Asian Americans United, NO ICE Philly, New Sanctuary Movement, Woori Center, CAIR Philly and the Movement of Immigrant Leaders in Pennsylvania, the hour-long vigil was concluded with the somber reading of the names of at least 21 immigrants killed by ICE in 2026 so far.

Cultural Preservation program at Echoes of Resistance:

On Friday night, July 10th, at Studio 34 in West Philly, four amazing artists with roots in Palestine, Iran, Syria, & Lebanon performed to preserve and elevate their culture through dance, poetry, music & art. Sponsored by and held within the current exhibition by Echoes of Resistance, an archive of protest & political actions throughout Philadelphia in support of a free & sovereign Palestine by the Philly-Palestine Coalition over the decades.

Dancer Olivia Alsamadi, Poet Maha Hashri, singers Sarah Khatami and Line On Some Trip (L.O.S.T.) kept the appreciative audience spellbound throughout the evening.

All proceeds donated to Palestinian & Sudanese mutual aid organizations. by @jpiette660

Chanting “No more rich man’s wars,” hundreds of veterans and active-duty GIs marched at an “Independence from Billionaires” parade in Philadelphia on the 4th of July.

It was the largest such protest since Dewey Canyon III, the veterans' week-long protest on the Mall in Washington in April 1971. Not as massive or confrontational, but participants just seeing each other together at this event seemed to give everyone more confidence –– it seemed like there was a lot of potential for future actions.

Coming from as far away as California,
Maine and Florida, the veterans and GIs contingent made up the majority of the large “Peoples Parade” during a mile-long march that was led by an “Independence from Billionaires” blue and red banner.

Critical of mass deportation, forced displacement, climate crisis, and international wars, local and national groups organized the event as counterprogramming to the official 250th anniversary of the signing of the
Declaration of Independence.

The significant Veterans Against Fascism contingent featured dozens of black and white signs and banners targeting U.S. forever wars. The signs attacked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) kidnappings and fascism as the military veterans and family members took the streets despite temperatures over 100 degrees.

Current military members who oppose U.S. support for genocide in
Palestine walked side-by-side with veterans of U.S. wars against Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam.
A short rally took place near Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was
signed 250 years ago. Representatives from Veterans for Peace, About Face, Military Families Speak Out, and
Fayetteville Resistance Coalition raised the necessity of military personnel active and no-longer-active to speak out
against unjust wars and attacks on democratic rights.

Speakers emphasized the right
of active-duty military members to
refuse illegal or immoral orders.

The July 4th Peoples Parade in Philadelphia encircled Independence Hall, the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Lead by hundreds veterans from across the country, union members, immigrants, families, Quakers, mutual aid groups, renters and more, declared independence from fascism, imperialism and the billionaires who profit from it all.

As part of the Philly Palestine Coalition Echoes of Resistance exhibit, which ends August 2, a panel of elders was featured on June 28. The participants included:

Deborah Wei is a founder of Asian Americans United and the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School and has been active in fighting displacement of Chinatown for over 40 years, stopping the construction of a prison, a stadium, a casino and most recently an arena in Philadelphia Chinatown. @deborah.wei @asianamericansunited

Pam Africa led a movement that took Mumia Abu-Jamal off death row and has been fighting to get him and other political prisoners out of prison since the 1980s. @_pamafrica @bringmumiahome

Constitutional Assembly for Mumia

A 24-hour occupation at Philadelphia City Hall's Octavius Catto memorial was held June 29-30 to call on the City to designate July 3 as "Mumia Liberation Day", almost forty-four years to the day the political prisoner was unjustly sentenced to death in 1982.

A coalition of community organizations and advocates organized the public gathering, featuring speakers from a range of backgrounds, including activists, educators, physicians, and former NYC Council member, Charles Barron.

Terri Maurer-Carter attended the rally and explained to the participants that as court stenographer for the 1982 trial, she heard and later testified in court that Judge Albert Sabo said "Yeah, and I'm going to help them fry the n----r".

Spirited activists occupied the sidewalk on the south side of city hall, not far from the District Attorney's office where for over 40 years, a succession of officials have refused to seek justice for Mumia.

Coalition members state that Mumia Abu-Jamal's case has remained the subject of public debate for more than four decades. Supporters contend that his conviction was unfairly won through police misconduct, prosecutorial bias, judicial bias, and other procedural irregularities. They are urging city leaders to acknowledge those concerns through a public proclamation and renewed dialogue on the historical role of the death penalty in Philadelphia.

The coalition also points to concerns raised by legal advocates and human rights organizations regarding Abu-Jamal's medical care and conditions of confinement. According to organizers, these concerns include inadequate treatment for chronic medical conditions, extended periods of solitary confinement, and broader questions about the care provided to elderly incarcerated individuals.

Speakers called on city officials to recognize the continuing significance of Abu-Jamal's case, demanding justice, transparency, accountability, and improved treatment of incarcerated people.
