Our east end adventure now leads us to Parsons Blacksmith Shop in Springs, aka God’s Country. Place is awesome when you see it in action. Charles Parson has been referred to as a man of rare mechanical ability. Aside from his blacksmithing skills, his shop was also equipped with steam power for various operations, although I wasn’t able to find exactly what. @easthamptonstar wrote in 1904, “Charles Parsons, the Edison of Springs, will soon bring out something to excite the wonder and admiration of the people. He has taken a contract to build for Peter Koppelman, the progressive and wide awake vegetable man, an automobile wagon, from which will be sold vegetables throughout the town. The vehicle will be equipped with a five horsepower engine and will have regulation wagon wheels with steel tires. Both Mr. Parsons and Mr. Koppleman have confidence that the machine will be a success.” Charles Parsons of Springs, has just turned out a credible piece of work in the shape of a wood sawing machine for W.L. Edwards, of Springs. The machine consists of a five horsepower engine connected to a buzz saw, all mounted on a four wheel truck. The truck is so heavy and the machinery so firmly mounted upon it, that Mr. Edwards can back it up to a pile of wood, and proceed to sawing immediately without any fuss about it. We understand the machine will be seen at work in this village next week.” Maybe somebody in the comments can remind me what that event was last year that they had the shop running and the man was forging tools and such. I referred to it as Springs Fest but maybe I’m misremembering. Follow us now to our next stop on the #easthampton250 scavenger hunt! Soak Hide Dreen. This was a popular spot to soak and soften leather hide to be made into clothing, bedding, and shelters, to name a few. I probably could’ve used some for my Temu shed but I couldn’t find time to soak and chew the hide which is like a full time job unto itself. I grew up in and around Northwest Woods, this was the first time I’ve stopped to look at the school house. I must’ve driven by it thousands of times. It’s just past The Great Swamp headed towards Cedar Point. Became more educated today at the school house. We’ve arrrived at Jason’s Rock. This is tucked away as you enter Northwest Woods on a dirt highway. I’ve never seen this and one day I will have a sip of water from the top of the rock, just like Jason did. Maybe I’ll use a flexistraw. It’ll be a Jason’s Rock First. Chatfield’s Hole on Two Holes of Water! I admittedly have never really hiked around here during the warmer months, mostly just been on the pond to ice skate or at least swing by to see if there is any ice on it. Or to watch Josh Kouffman fall through the thin ice. Or who could forget likely the most epic game of local pond hockey ever played, as covered by @easthamptonstar on January 31st, 2013. The end of the vid shows the front page news of Matt Concelik sporting a nefarious grin as he hooks the skate of Matthew Brierley. Pudding Hill. Either a Miller (originally credited in local lore) or an Osborne (as credited on the actual plaque) stuck it to The Man here in the East Hampton Village. Local lore maintain that Redcoats smelled the delicious pudding being cooked and decided they would go pokin’ around up the property in order to practice pudding pilfering, as they were oft provided provisions around Sag Harbor & Southampton. Well, not here, not on that day. According to @easthamptonstar - In 1948, on the occasion of East Hampton’s 300th anniversary, Louise Mulford set the long poem to music.
An excerpt:
“Oh no, you’re not,” she made reply,
Then seized the boiling pot -
Ran with it through another door
And threw it, blazing hot,
Pudding and all, adown the hills,
And lent it in the sand,
Amid the curses, loud and deep,
Of all the hungry band.
This thing was naught, perhaps, beside
What patriots daily do,
And yet the spirit that inspired
Was Freedom’s spirit, too. The place and tale are widely known,
Fresh is the legend still;
And all East Hampton villagers
Are proud of Pudding Hill.

Ahoy! We find ourselves now at The Long Wharf of Sag Harbor! Great place for a stroll. When it was originally completed in 1771, the wharf was 30 rods long, a rod being 5 and a half yards long which is great because I love the arbitrary nature of the imperial system.
