What do you train for?

Some people just want to get in shape—to feel strong, capable, and hard to stop.

Others need a goal. Something specific to prepare for. A date on the calendar that makes them train a little harder and find out what happens when something is actually on the line.

At INVICTUS, both can coexist—and they make each other better.

The hobbyist and the competitor.

But maybe you’re somewhere in between.

Maybe you don’t dream of winning the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships or stepping into a cage. But you do want to test your mettle. You want to know what your training looks like when the adrenaline hits, an unfamiliar opponent is standing across from you, and your coaches and teammates are in your corner.

That’s where Muay Thai smokers and local Jiu-Jitsu tournaments are so valuable.

The “smoker” comes from an old boxing tradition of informal exhibition bouts held in gyms and private clubs—the name generally traced to the smoke-filled rooms where they took place. The tradition eventually carried into kickboxing and Muay Thai as a way for developing athletes to experience the nerves, preparation, crowd, opponent, and intensity of competition without necessarily taking on the stakes of a sanctioned fight.

Modern smokers are typically developmental exhibitions rather than official fights. Depending on the event, they may use additional protective equipment, modified rules, controlled intensity, and no official winner or loss added to a record.

And I love that.

You don’t have to make martial arts your life to find out what you’re capable of.

You can train a few nights a week, have a career, raise a family—and still decide that once in a while you want to walk into the fire and see what you’ve got.

Recently, Pat and Sergio did exactly that, stepping into a Muay Thai smoker and representing INVICTUS.

They trained. They prepared. They got nervous. And then they stepped in there anyway.

That’s the point.

You don’t have to be a professional fighter to do something that scares you.

Sometimes you just need a reason to find another gear. by @jroot_11

Some shots from @combatzonemma on Saturday night. @sith__lrd put on a damn show, @d.huff.7 and @jroot_11 made a super smooth team in the corner!

I love getting shots from behind the scenes, fight photos are always cool, and fighting is an individual sport - but there’s always a team behind the fighter and those relationships are powerful.

See you again soon CombatZone!
