Plan your October around more than the usual itinerary, this is one of the best months all year to actually catch Japan's festivals in motion, not just read about them.

Start in Tokyo: thousands of lanterns light the path through Ikegami Honmonji on the night of October 12, the high point of the three-day Oeshiki festival — worth staying out for. Then get yourself to Kawagoe, just 30 minutes from Ikebukuro, on October 17–18, where Edo-style floats roll through "Little Edo" by day and face off after dark.

Block out October 22 for Kyoto, and don't settle for just one event, because the city hands you two on the same night. Watch over 2,000 participants bring more than 1,000 years of Japanese history to life at the Jidai Matsuri, then head into the mountains for the Kurama Fire Festival, where villagers carry blazing torches through the dark streets.

Close the month with the Tokyo International Film Festival (Oct 26–Nov 4), catch a free outdoor screening, or go all in on a ticketed one.

It's already time to plan your whole month! Comment OCTOBER and check the full guides to each on JapanDen's blog. 🏮🔥🎬 by @jrpass

Most people don't check this until they're already at the station. 🚄

So here are the shinkansen baggage rules that you actually need to know:
📏 Under 160cm total → any seat, no issues
📦 160–250cm → reserve an oversized baggage seat when booking
🚫 Over 250cm → not allowed on board

And if you miss the seat reservation with a large bag? It's a ¥1,000 fine, charged on the train.

Always remember to plan ahead and measure your luggage before you travel: height + width + depth.

👉 Comment LUGGAGE and read all the important information you need to know when travelling with luggage in a Shinkansen.

Tokyo Bay’s biggest fireworks festival is coming back. after 11 years.

The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival returns on October 23–24, 2026, for the first time since 2015.

First launched in 1988, it grew into one of Tokyo’s most loved summer traditions, historically lighting up the sky near Harumi Wharf with more than 12,000 fireworks a year for crowds of around 700,000 people, before it was paused in 2016 while the Olympic and Paralympic Village was built in the Harumi area.

Now, organized by Chuo Ward as part of its 80th-anniversary celebrations, it’s finally set to return.

It’s free to attend, in Chuo City, Tokyo, exact viewing spots and the full event schedule haven’t been announced yet, so this is one worth bookmarking and checking back on.

Tag someone who’d fly to Tokyo just for this one night.

Most Kansai itineraries do the same loop: Osaka, Kyoto, maybe a day in Nara.

The Kansai Wide Area Pass covers all of that too, but it also reaches a lot of places that loop skips entirely.

Kinosaki Onsen is a ryokan town built around its hot springs, the kind of place where the plan for the evening is just wandering between bathhouses in a yukata.

Hikone barely makes anyone's list, but its castle is one of only five in Japan with National Treasure status and one of just twelve still standing with its original keep, looking out over Lake Biwa from a hill most travelers never climb.

Cross into Shikoku and there's Takamatsu, home to Japan's largest shopping arcade, with a short ferry ride from there to Naoshima, an island built around contemporary art in the Seto Inland Sea.

And via the Kyoto Tango Railway, this pass even reaches Amanohashidate, ranked for generations as one of Japan's Three Views.

It's some of the most amazing 5 consecutive days, in one pass, and a much bigger Kansai than the postcard version.

Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, you've probably heard of, but they're just 3 of Japan's 47 prefectures, and most first-time visitors never make it past a handful of them.

Every prefecture has its own reason to go: Hokkaidō's snow and seafood markets, Okinawa's turquoise coastline and distinct culture, Tottori's sand dunes rising straight out of the Sea of Japan, Ishikawa's gold-leaf craft tradition in Kanazawa's old samurai district.

The JR Pass covers nearly all of Japan's Shinkansen and JR local lines, so hopping between prefectures costs a lot less planning — and usually a lot less money — than booking each leg separately.

So, honestly: how many of these 30 have you actually been to? Comment your count below 👇

Once a year, a quiet corner of Tokyo turns into a parade of ghost cats.

Welcome to the Bakeneko Festival in Kagurazaka, named after the bakeneko, the shape-shifting “ghost cat” of Japanese folklore, and yes, it’s exactly as delightfully strange as it sounds. Face paint turns anyone into a cat, a Ghost Cat Market sells cat-themed snacks and merch, and the whole street follows the parade down Kagurazaka O-dori toward Iidabashi Station and back.

Equal parts spooky and adorable, would you dress up? 🐈

Japan just topped Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Countries in the World, the fourth year running! ✨🎉

In the UK edition, where Japan placed a close #2 behind Greece, readers cited the rail network, the hot springs, the cherry blossoms, and a country that holds onto centuries of tradition while still feeling like the future.

Spend any time there and a few things become obvious fast.

Japan has a reputation for safety that’s hard to overstate, people walk home late at night without a second thought, and lost wallets have a way of turning up at the police box instead of disappearing.

It’s remarkably clean, too: streets without a stray piece of trash, trains spotless even standing-room-packed at rush hour.

And it’s built to be figured out on your own, platforms are numbered, trains run to the minute, and a single IC card taps you through almost every gate in the country.

Then there’s the welcome itself: a bow at the right moment, a conductor who points you to the right platform before you even ask, a shopkeeper who remembers your order by day two.

None of that happens by accident, and four years at #1 says people keep noticing.

So tell us: safe, spotless, effortless, or impossibly kind: what’s the one thing about Japan that would make you book the flight tomorrow? Comment below 👇

Suica or ICOCA: does it actually matter which one you get? Barely.

Japan's major IC cards work interchangeably from Tokyo to Osaka and nearly everywhere in between, so whichever one lands in your wallet first is the right one.

ICOCA comes from JR West, born in Osaka; Suica comes from JR East, born in Tokyo, same 10-year validity from your last tap, different counter for the refund.

Beyond trains, both pay for buses, vending machines, convenience stores, and station lockers nationwide. And no, an IC card doesn't replace your Japan Rail Pass, it's your everyday tap-and-go, while the Pass covers the long hauls, like Tokyo to Kyoto.

Comment CARD and we'll send the full guide!

Do you want to have fun as if you were a child again?

Here's our bucket list of Japan's main amusement parks, and what makes each one worth the trip.

➡️ Tokyo Disney Resort needs no introduction: Disneyland and DisneySea sit just outside central Tokyo and were both among the world's most-visited theme parks in 2024's rankings, a short JR ride from Tokyo Station.

➡️ Universal Studios Japan in Osaka isn't far behind, home to Super Nintendo World and reachable by a fully JR-covered ride straight to Universal City Station.

➡️ Fuji-Q Highland, right at the base of Mount Fuji, has spent decades chasing coaster records, Fujiyama was once the world's tallest, and Takabisha opened as the world's steepest before that title moved on.

➡️ Nagashima Spa Land, outside Nagoya, holds a record that's still current: Steel Dragon 2000 is the Guinness World Record holder for longest steel roller coaster on the planet.

➡️ Huis Ten Bosch, a Dutch-themed park in Nagasaki, turns into a sea of light every winter with its Kingdom of Lights display.

➡️ Sanrio Puroland in Tama is entirely indoors, rain, heat, or snow, Hello Kitty and friends don't care.

➡️ LEGOLAND Japan in Nagoya was the brand's first Japanese park.

➡️ Toei Kyoto Studio Park is the odd one out in the best way: a real working samurai-film studio you can walk through, Edo-period sets and all.

➡️ Ghibli Park in Aichi is a category of its own, no roller coasters, no big rides, just a walkthrough world built around Studio Ghibli's films, including a Howl's Moving Castle replica several stories tall.

These are the niner parks that will make our inner child feel so alive again!

Save this, and start planning which one's first, with JRPass!
