I got off social media for a whole year, and it was even better than you might imagine.

Some of you might remember we posted a little announcement video that I was stepping back— it’s tired as hell, the whole “deleting the app for a while” and you end up back on there 5 days later, so I was determined to stay off. Here’s what I learned:

1. It ain’t just social media. Even once I deleted the apps, I still texted a lot, doom-googled Liverpool articles, always finding something. This actually made me get a flip phone for the month of March, which was…INCREDIBLE!! Haven’t felt so healthy in years. However, it ended up being impractical (was missing texts from mom, couldn’t scan QR code menus) so now I’ve got an iPhone with a ton of psychotic blockers and deterrents, even for shit like safari

2. People love to say “you must have so much more time now!” And I do when I’m at my best, but that’s actually not the main benefit I found. The real key was that in my spare moments (on the train, for example) I ended up doing things like reading a book or journaling that were materially GOOD for my brain, so it became much easier to just do what I needed to do (I’m talking wake up on time, or put in a load of laundry). I’m still trying to get back there but I understand the recipe now. Phones have really undercut some of us in terms of natural motivation to seize the day.

3. It gave me a lot of time to sit with my relationship to music. Some of you know I’ve also been struggling with disc herniations for about a year and a half. It’s definitely brought some hard times on me where I had to set aside most of my passions (recording, touring, networking, pickup sports) because I just didn’t feel up to doing any of it. But if I learned one thing from getting off socials, it’s that I DO love making music and I always will— the shit I started to have a distaste for was the way releasing music can inflate or bruise your ego. I’m still deciding what stepping back in looks like, but I’ve been healthy enough to make new songs for the last month and I’m thankful for that.

A 3 part story (swipe).

This song “shades of grass” was written about my back problems (some of yall probably know by now I have a herniated disk and a few bulging ones), and other folks lives to keep it all in perspective.

The new album is OUT NOW!

I started making this about a year ago during a massive shift in creative mindset. ‘Get Lost!’ is a group of 8 of my best songs that began with that explosion.

You can hear lots of my life in this album— my spine problems I’ve been dealing with, preparing to open myself up to love again, the fleeting moments of true joy that make life worth it. My wonderful mom has a monologue and my brother and grandfather have a couple skits. A bunch of my friends contributed. This is what music always could’ve been for me.
