DAY ONE | The Journey to a New Heart 🖤

Never thought I’d be documenting a journey like this, but here we are.

Today is Day One of sharing the process of hopefully getting on the heart transplant list and, eventually, receiving a new heart.

Huge shoutout to my wife @afmsams , she’s already been moving mountains behind the scenes and got me set up to see a heart transplant specialist tomorrow. 🖤

There are a lot of unknowns ahead, but we’re taking this thing one day, one appointment, one step at a time.

Keep the prayers coming. Keep the encouragement coming. And if you want to, follow along as we navigate this season of life together.

187 THIS MORNING. TIME TO GET BACK TO WORK. 🖤🔒

I never really shared my full 75 Hard journey.

From December to February, I went from 260 lbs to 175 lbs. But looking back, the biggest transformation wasn’t the 85 pounds.

It was my lifestyle.

75 Hard taught me discipline. It changed my relationship with food, training and what I was capable of when I stopped making excuses.

Fast forward to now and life looks a whole lot different.

This heart journey has thrown things at me I never could’ve prepared for, and right now I’m battling some fluid retention issues. I weighed in around 187 today, and while I understand every pound on that scale isn’t simply weight gain, I’m ready to start finding my rhythm again.

Ready to get back in the gym consistently.
Ready to move my body.
Ready to keep tightening up my nutrition.
Ready to work my way back toward 175, the right way and within what my doctors allow.

Because this time I’m not training just to look different.

I’m training because I want to LIVE. 🙏🏾

The goal isn’t to pretend nothing happened. The goal is to take everything I’ve learned, respect the body God gave me and keep fighting for the healthiest version of myself possible.

Maybe it’s finally time I start sharing the REAL 75 Hard journey that started all of this.

260 ➡️ 175 ➡️ Heart journey ➡️ STILL WORKING.

Different battle. Same discipline. 🖤

SMOKED BABY BACK RIBS | 3-2-1 METHOD 🐷🔥💨

Six hours. Low & slow. Two racks. TWO DIFFERENT FLAVORS. 😮‍💨

These were worth EVERY minute.

🔥 WHAT I USED:
• Baby back ribs
• Worcestershire sauce — binder
• Black pepper
• Meat Church The Gospel
• Butter 🧈
• Brown sugar
• Come and Eat It Finishing Glaze
• The Jank Spicy BBQ Sauce 🌶️
• Butcher paper

💨 FIRST 3 HOURS | BUILD THE BARK

Pulled the membrane off the back of both racks, coated them with Worcestershire sauce as the binder, then seasoned with black pepper FIRST followed by a generous layer of Meat Church The Gospel.

Onto the smoker at 225°F for 3 hours.

🔥 NEXT 2 HOURS | THE SAUCE BATH

Pulled both racks and got them ready for the wrap.

Butter + brown sugar on BOTH sides, then we went two different directions:

🐷 Rack 1: Come and Eat It Finishing Glaze
🌶️ Rack 2: The Jank Spicy BBQ Sauce

And yeah… BOTH SIDES. We ain’t cheating the bottom. 😂

Wrapped each rack in butcher paper and put them back on the smoker at 225°F for another 2 hours.

🔥 FINAL HOUR | SET THAT BARK

Unwrapped them, drizzled them with BBQ sauce and gave them another hit of Meat Church The Gospel.

Back on the smoker unwrapped at 225°F for ONE MORE HOUR to let everything tack up and finish.

3 HOURS. 2 HOURS. 1 HOUR. COMPLETE. ✅

Tender. Smoky. Sticky. Bark on point.

One sweet. One spicy.

Either way… JSAMMY SMOKED IT. 😮‍💨🔥💨

GRAYSON HAYES PUT ON A CLINIC. 😤🏈🔥

Under center and in COMPLETE control.

I counted AT LEAST 4 TOUCHDOWNS from the little guy today! 😂💨 Every time he touched it, something was happening.

Making plays. Finding the end zone. Helping push his squad to the VICTORY. 🏆

SMOKED JALAPEÑO CHEDDAR POPPERS 🌶️🥓🔥

Creamy. Smoky. Cheesy. Sweet heat.

These joints had LAYERS. 😮‍💨🔥

🌶️ WHAT I USED:
• Fresh jalapeños
• Hickory-smoked bacon 🥓
• Philadelphia cream cheese
• Triple cheddar shredded cheese 🧀
• Carolina Reaper smoked shredded cheese 🔥
• Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning
• Hot honey 🍯🌶️

🔥 HOW I DID IT:

Cut the jalapeños in half lengthwise and cleaned out the seeds and membranes.

Mixed together the Philadelphia cream cheese, triple cheddar and Carolina Reaper smoked cheese, then seasoned it with Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning.

Loaded up each jalapeño with the cheese mixture, wrapped them in hickory-smoked bacon, then gave them another light hit of Tony’s.

💨 Onto the smoker at 225°F for 2½ hours until the peppers were tender, the cheese was melted and that bacon was cooked through.

Then came the FINISHER…

HOT HONEY. 🍯🔥

Drizzled it right over the top and let that sweet heat meet the smoke, Creole seasoning and Carolina Reaper cheese.

MANNNN LISTEN. 😮‍💨🌶️

Smoky. Creamy. Salty. Sweet. Spicy.

PORK BELLY BURNT ENDS… AKA MEAT CANDY. 🥓🔥😮‍💨

Thick-cut bacon turned into sticky, smoky little bites of greatness on the Pit Boss.

And yeah… these disappeared QUICK. 😂

🔥 WHAT I USED:
• Thick-sliced pork belly bacon
• Yellow mustard binder
• Meat Church The Gospel seasoning
• Brown sugar
• Butter 🧈
• Honey 🍯
• Come and Eat It Rib Glaze Finishing Sauce

💨 HOW I DID IT:

Coated the pork belly with a light layer of mustard as the binder, then hit every piece generously with Meat Church The Gospel.

Onto the Pit Boss at 225°F for 2 hours to let that smoke work and start building the bark.

After 2 hours, moved everything into a foil pan and added brown sugar, butter, honey and Come and Eat It Rib Glaze Finishing Sauce. Tossed everything together until those pieces were covered in that goodness. 😮‍💨

Covered the pan tightly with foil and put it back on the Pit Boss at 225°F for another hour to get tender and let that sauce cook down into the meat.

Pull ‘em when they’re tender, sticky and looking like straight PORK CANDY. 🥓🍯🔥

Sweet. Smoky. Sticky. Dangerous.

DAY TWO | The Journey to a New Heart 🖤

Today we met with the heart transplant specialist, and we got a lot of information to process.

Right now, a heart transplant may not be my best path forward. Because of my medical history with Kawasaki disease and other risk factors specific to my case, there are serious concerns about rejection and what life after transplant could look like.

We also talked about something that really put everything into perspective: had we not caught what was happening with my heart, the outlook could have been very different. So regardless of how heavy today was, I’m grateful we caught it.

The next possibility is bypass surgery, but there’s still work to do before making that decision, genetic testing, viability testing, a cardiac MRI, stress testing and more. The specialist also has concerns about how my body could handle a double bypass and recover afterward.

So right now, the path we’re leaning toward looks different than what we originally expected.

His belief is that under his care, with an aggressive medication regimen, strict dietary changes and me doing my part, we can focus on giving me the best quality of life and the longest life possible. We’ll know much more as the testing continues over the next few months.

But before I left, he gave me some instructions I can follow immediately:

Go live your life. And love on your family.

Yeah… I can do that. 🖤

So that’s exactly what I intend to do ; TO THE FULLEST.

We still have a long road ahead of us, and there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Keep the prayers coming. Keep following the journey. We’re taking it one day at a time.

Day Two. Still here. Still fighting. Still living.

ONE WEEK IN | Living While We Wait 🖤

One week into this journey, and this past week I made a decision: I’m going to LIVE.

I spent as much time with my family as I could. Back-to-school shopping, Strike + Reel, board games on the couch, laughing, relaxing and just being present.

Saturday night, Stevie and Lamont came over for family game night, and that was exactly what I needed. Just good people, good laughs, a little competition 😂 and another reminder to appreciate these simple moments with the people we love.

Yesterday we had an amazing service at church, shared some tears with our best friends, then sat around their house enjoying brunch. Nothing extravagant… just the kind of moments that hit a little different now. 🖤

Then God threw another one at me.

I randomly ran into my boy Josh Stubbs at Academy in Greenville, somebody I haven’t seen since my semi-pro football days. It’s crazy how the Lord will bring somebody back into your life at a time you didn’t even realize you needed them. We picked right back up, made plans to get together, and Sunday we’re hitting the golf course. ⛳️

This Thursday I’m back with my cardiologist to go over everything he found from my testing and hopefully get some more answers about what comes next. I’m also praying I get the green light to return to work Monday.

I can’t say enough about how my employers have treated me through this past month. Having owners who genuinely care about me beyond what I bring to the workplace has been an absolute blessing.

And today… we’re getting MOVING again.

It’s been about two months since I’ve worked out. Nothing crazy, probably just me and the dog getting some steps in. Starting slow, listening to my body, and refusing to let myself fall into a sedentary lifestyle.

One week later, there are still questions. There’s still uncertainty.

But today?

I’m alive. I’m with my family. I’m loved. And I’m blessed.

That’s more than enough reason to smile today.
