Nothingā€™s As Cool As Swing Had so much fun making this one- back to my tap roots for @arabesquedancestudio senior tap competition team 2024-25. I rarely use props and wanted them integrated throughout the routine; this whole work was a puzzle in my head šŸ§© Proud of these lovely ladies and their hard work all season long! I love stepping into a coaching role & this was such a fulfilling season. Ending it with a bang as the @onpointdancecompetition national champs!!! Bridge Over Troubled Water What a beautiful moment in time :ā€™) Lacey has always been the little sister I never had and itā€™s truly been such an honor to choreograph on her all these years. An even bigger honor to be tasked with creating her senior solo. This song means a whole lot to my family & thereā€™s truly no one better to bring it to life than Lace. Heartbreaker A major throwback in honor of 2 weeks of ā€˜Michaelā€™šŸŖ© This was Sadieā€™s 2nd solo ever and 1st tap solo & she absolutely crushed it (and she was only 11 at the time!) I gave her some tough sequences right off the bat & it was definitely a challenge at first, but she rose to the occasion and grew so much from it (and now deals with even harder choreo from meā€¦ so sorry lol). Not My Responsibility Maya is one of those students that always wants to run it ā€œone more timeā€ after class and truly puts her whole being into her performance. She has such incredible athleticism, and I really wanted to push her to find nuance with this piece- itā€™s all in the details. Super proud of her for stepping into her own with this one! Pay As You Go Proud is the first word that comes to mind when I watch this - @_lacey.dagenais is an absolute beast & is so willing to dive head first into anything that comes her way (even some of my craziest ideas that donā€™t make the final cut). Watching Lacey grow and really make this piece her own really inspired me as an artist and a coach & thatā€™s truly all you can ask for! A little more about the work: Laurie Andersonā€™s ā€œO Supermanā€ is inspired by the 1980 failed hostage rescue attempt in Iran, questioning the validity of high-tech military power. She uses a vocoder (originally used for disguising voices) to create this familiar but super robotic sound that inspired the movement quality for this piece. The song is a prayer to authority, a one-sided conversation, asking if technology and false information can provide salvation. It felt very relevant to todayā€™s climate and I really felt pulled to create a piece that turned some heavier topics into art. Usually Iā€™d save a song with this much weight for a more concert dance setting, but I knew Lace would knock it out of the park! Do You Rise What an honor & a joy to choreograph one of @madelynnkesler senior solos šŸ«‚ The Kesler family means so much to me & Maddie is one of the few students I teach that I actually shared the stage with.
