Finally got back to Martial arts! Got my Yellow belt in Nam Pai Chuan Kung Fu, which took way longer than planned (see below if interested).

In 2022 I had a mental health crisis and despite trying, was unable to get to regular classes until now. This time I wanted to put right a few things I regret from the past. One of them was being unable to grade.

The grading was extremely challenging for me, we had a practice mock grading a few weeks prior, afterwards I was so embarrassed I wanted to quit and never go back. Fortunately I persevered and found it extremely rewarding.

I have found my Martial arts journey extra challenging with some of my Autistic gifts (ha). The gym we practice in is extremely bright harsh overhead lighting, a strong echo - I estimate I can only understand whats being spoken less than 60% of the time, and I have delayed audio processing (words take a disproportionate time, compared to instantly getting something visual or physical). Making eye contact is its own insane challenge.

When I first joined in 2021 I regretted not being able to be myself, to unmask, and to talk and form connections with the people I wanted to. Coming back and challenging this is tricky as old social hangovers carry on from before. Its been hard work and by the time we finish class, after 2 hours of sensory overload, I've only got capacity for about 30 seconds of meaningful conversation before it reverts to any nonsense that pops into my head.

I even went as far as riding my bike a longer route home so that the other biker didn't think I was following him, and/or as I lacked the social skills to know how to handle bumping into him along the way. I did eventually go that way home, and did bump into him, and as expected: I had absolutely no idea what to say, and he looked SO confused. Very embarrassing for me, which leads to chronic overthinking.

I think I've completed most of the extra cringy things now. Had some difficult conversations. The teacher Henry has been supportive of anything I've brought up with him.

That being said I felt extra autistic this week and didn't goto class, swings and roundabouts I guess. Well done to anyone who managed to read all this! by @jsbydesign
